What makes you happy?

I was finishing up a wonderful book yesterday, feeling a sense of complete contentment, when a friend called me out of the blue to say she couldn't make it out tonight because her family was coming over.😳
That little moment made me want to sit down and dissect the whole idea of happiness.
It arrived without any warning, brought a sudden warmth to my afternoon, lasted just a few moments... and then vanished without so much as a goodbye.
I've come to think that happiness and misery are inextricably linked. They exist in a constant dance with one another; happiness requires the context of misery to be understood, just as misery needs happiness to define its depth.☕
totally; you gotta experience the bad stuff to even realize when things are actually going well. there are people out there who, I don't know, have everything perfectly lined up, but they're miserable because they don't even realize how lucky they actually are.
like, take a family, kids, a steady 9-to-5—for some, that’s just a grind, so they go looking for a quick fix or an adrenaline rush, maybe cheating on a spouse or gambling... stuff like that.
whereas for someone else, having that family and a solid job is basically the dream, and then—man, it sucks—just when everything is going too damn well, something goes sideways just to remind us that the good times don't last forever. happiness is fleeting... it's kind of stupid to believe in "happily ever after" or a "happy life." sure, you get those little moments of satisfaction, but a constant state of bliss? nah, probably just a fantasy...
