Maybe try navigating by looking for landmarks instead? Like, "I turned left at that sketchy yellow building," until you hit the corner with the local hardware store or whatever...

Or just memorize which way the main boulevard runs and figure out where all the side streets sit in relation to it... at least then you'd have one decent point of reference to work with.

Honestly, that's pretty much the only way. But when you're driving, man, it's impossible to track the route and scan for landmarks at the same time... especially when you're lost in some random US city you've never seen before.
I don't know, if I actually want to remember how I got somewhere, I have to be hyper-focused, like I'm cramming for some massive final exam 🙂 and it just drains me.
Then two days later? Poof. Gone.😠
Meanwhile, I've got this neighbor who was road-tripping through Europe a few years back, and I tagged along with her a month ago—she can still map out every single street we drove down perfectly.

Hey everyone. Got a bit of a situation/question here... Sorry if this isn't really what this sub is for, but I figured I'd throw it out there and maybe someone here actually knows their stuff.
Basically, my sense of direction is absolute garbage. Like, zero orientation skills. For example, the other day I went over to a buddy's place for the first time—we were all together, five of us—and even though we found his apartment just fine, two days later when I had to head back, I completely blanked on how to get there.
It happens all the time. We’ll go on a road trip to another city, and then it’s my turn to drive us home, but I just can't wrap my head around the route we took. I can't remember a single turn, so I usually just try to dodge those situations entirely to avoid the embarrassment.

Does this thing actually have a name? And how do people deal with it? Honestly, it's driving me crazy because every time I go somewhere new, I end up wandering around lost, asking for directions, looking like an idiot... It might sound funny to some of you, but trust me, it's not funny to me. Thanks.
