Chris Morgan said:Jewelry pricing is mostly calculated by the gram (unless you are looking at full sets), so a specific price tag doesn't tell you much on its own. The minor issue is that jewelers often refuse to disclose the price per gram for unknown reasons. Instead, they weigh the ring, calculate the total, and multiply it by the gold rate on a calculator... which makes it easy to reverse-engineer the math. About two years ago, I was traveling through the Midwest and parts of Ohio to browse shops, and everything was relatively close together. Word is that prices are even more competitive in certain southern states compared to what you find elsewhere.
Exactly. They don't want to give you the breakdown because it feels like they just charge everyone whatever "feels right" in the moment.
They told us gold was going for 44 miles, and our ring ended up being 423 miles (9.07g), which works out to 47 miles per gram. Then we realized they totally ignored the 10% discount they were advertising on the local news stations. We had to push back a bit—they tried claiming they didn't run any promos. Finally, we got it. We just made it clear we came in specifically for that deal, put on our best "unhappy customer" faces, and eventually secured the discount 😁 and my God
Anyway, we’d budgeted maybe $5k max for a ring, but it ended up costing about half that. 😉
