Fiber internet installation help in IT Support ·
Hey everyone,

So, I just moved into a new rental, and ExxonMobil tells me that fiber optic service is available at this address—apparently, it’s been run right up to every individual unit. 🎉 When I asked if there would be any construction needed, the representative from ExxonMobil told me it shouldn't be an issue; they'd just run the cable through the existing conduits to where the router goes. Her colleague added that they might need to drill a small hole through the wall leading to the building hallway if there isn't already a dedicated fiber port.

The thing is, my landlord is pretty adamant about not drilling any holes, which makes me think I might be stuck with old-school internet—unless... is what I'm looking at in this photo actually a fiber optic port?

If it isn't, does anyone have experience with this kind of drilling? I'm wondering just how invasive the process actually is.

Yeah, thanks 🙂
Just one more thing—do I actually need to trek down to the Post Office every single time, or can I just drop the envelope in my mailbox (assuming I’ve got enough stamps on it and everything)? The post office isn't exactly on my way, and frankly, it sounds like a bit of a hassle—plus, my mailbox is right there. And if I'm being honest, I'm feeling a little lazy today 😁

I have a bit of a silly question. I asked my local auntie at the USPS office, but she didn't exactly give me a helpful answer—and honestly, since she looked like one of those people who just isn't thrilled to be alive today, I didn't want to push her too hard.

So, I’m trying to figure out how international mail actually works. Everywhere I read, people claim it's overpriced, that standard letters just vanish into thin air (I’m talking about basic envelopes here, nothing fancy or certified), and even if they do arrive, they often look like they've been ripped open or tampered with.

The folks I’ve asked all seem to have completely different stories. Some say you can just buy extra regular stamps to cover the "international" value ($2.75?), while others insist you need specific "international" stamps—though I'm not even sure those exist as a separate thing? Then there’s the debate over whether you have to bring the letter to the counter to show it, or if you can just drop it in a blue mailbox... I ended up more confused than when I started.

And yes, I realize email exists and all that. Maybe I’m just being old-fashioned by bothering with this, but there’s something much more charming about physical mail. 🤣
