Traffic violation procedures

Back in February 2007, I got flagged by a transit officer while riding the light rail, and they slapped me with a citation. The thing is, I actually had my pass on me, but I just couldn't fish it out of my bag at that exact moment. I eventually found it much later—I actually still have it tucked away somewhere—but the officer was incredibly rude and aggressive, demanding my ID right then and there, so I handed it over. Since then, the police have been trying to track me down at my residence, but I’ve never been home when they stopped by, and they haven't even managed to serve me a court summons yet. It's like nobody's even been able to deliver the notice!
Does anyone know when this fine officially reaches the statute of limitations? And would it be worth my while to show up to court with the pass as proof?
