Can someone please get back to me on my post? I’m looking for anyone who actually knows their way around this stuff.
Hey everyone, quick question for the group. My sister just got hit with a notice yesterday from some debt collection agency out of Washington, D.C.—I think they’re one of those aggressive outfits—stating she either needs to settle her outstanding balance immediately or face a lawsuit. She’s totally freaking out right now and is basically ready to drop her entire next paycheck just to make it go away. But here's what I'm wondering: does she actually *have* to pay this? The debt itself dates back nearly four years, and if I remember my consumer rights correctly, isn't there a statute of limitations after three years for stuff like mail-order purchases? If the debt has actually expired, what’s the play here? Does she need to send them a formal letter or something to shut it down?
