What exactly is "homophobia"? in Psychology ·
Brandon Rivera2 said:I mean, I don't strictly "know," it's more just what I'm thinking...

But do you actually know why you feel that way?
I mean, what specifically about the answers didn't sit right with you?

Brandon Rivera2 said:Honestly, I don't think anyone has actually given a solid answer yet...

If you're so certain, how can you claim you don't have the answer either?

Brandon Rivera2 said:Just so I actually know, honestly, otherwise there'd be no point even starting this thread...

But what do you think about all this?
What exactly is "homophobia"? in Psychology ·
Brandon Rivera2 said:I mean, I can't really tell where the thread is heading or how to steer it, especially since someone else started the whole thing about public spaces...

Well, you were definitely participating in it yourself—quite enthusiastically, too.
I suppose if you could just answer the questions from the original post, then maybe we can get back to (your own) topic. So, what exactly is homophobia, Brandon Rivera2?

Brandon Rivera2 said:Why am I being called a troll? Because we're talking about how gay people act in public. My point is just that public places have certain standards, and not everything is appropriate out there in the open...

Let's look at this differently. This was your original opening post:

Brandon Rivera2 said:So, I'm trying to wrap my head around what "homophobia" actually means and what specifically falls under that umbrella...
Is it just thinking homosexuality is unnatural but then not really doing anything about it? Or is it being against things like marriage equality or adoption rights without being physically aggressive toward people? Basically, what specific traits does someone need to have to be labeled a "homophobe"... because the term gets thrown around all the time, but it feels like nobody's ever quite clear on what they actually mean by it...

You titled this whole thread "What is 'homophobia'"?

So, I suppose I have to ask—how does a discussion about public decency relate to your actual topic?
What exactly is "homophobia"? in Psychology ·
Brandon Rivera2 said:Everyone else seems happy to chime in, though. But after scrolling through a few pages now, it looks like nobody has actually given a straight answer on what specific traits make someone homophobic...

Brandon Rivera2 said:Look, the whole point is that being in public means following certain social norms, whether we're talking about messy food or sexual orientation...

Yeah, we're all participating voluntarily, I suppose. And we have provided answers to your questions.

Could you perhaps explain how your take on public spaces and "appropriate behavior" relates at all to "what is homophobia," which—if I may call you a massive troll—is what you actually set as the topic in your opening post and thread title?

Brandon Rivera2 said:Everyone acts like they’re all about being tolerant and stuff, but honestly, if they saw someone eating a massive, messy burger with extra onions right next to them in a crowded place, they’d change their tune pretty fast...

What are we even talking about now? Are you seriously comparing people eating kebabs in public to LGBTQ+ individuals being visible in public? If that's the case, maybe you should move this over to the Foodie forum instead of lingering here in Psychology.

Brandon Rivera2 said:Why wouldn't I? It's not like I hang out with any gay guys. Honestly, whether it's "natural" or "innate" doesn't really matter to me. If there was a national referendum on their rights, I'd vote no. Other than that, they don't bother me at all...

In that case, I'm not quite sure why you're even bothering to ask what homophobia is or whether you personally fit the description. You can think whatever you like—there's really no need to waste everyone's time here on the forum. Especially when it seems like the whole topic is just being used as a way to stir the pot and push views that don't actually relate to the question you originally asked in your first post.

Brandon Rivera2 said:I mean, nobody really wants to see someone out in the middle of a plaza stuffing their face with greasy burgers and onions or dropping pizza crusts everywhere...

Brandon Rivera2 said:But honestly, they just ruin my view. I can't even focus on the horizon when they're there...

Ugh, what a troll. 🤦

I honestly thought we were discussing this as a theoretical matter.

And yeah, I suppose what you're doing is pretty rude. It would probably be much better if you moved over to the Offtopic section or something similar—you know, where you can go ahead and invent problems or "contemplate" abstract concepts.

Brandon Rivera2 said:Look, I'm really not in any position to be calling the shots on what happens with the LGBTQ+ community...

I guess I'm wondering what your actual motivation is for bringing this up—is it just curiosity about whether one can be considered homophobic if they oppose certain legal rights while personally having nothing against individuals? Is that the core of it? I suppose you might think it's possible to hold negative political stances regarding the LGBTQ+ community without actually being homophobic toward people personally... if that makes sense. Do you truly believe political positions can be entirely decoupled from homophobia? And by that, I don't mean some irrational psychological phobia, but rather more of a social bias or, perhaps, just a collection of ingrained prejudices.

Honestly, whenever I’m reading his posts, I start picturing scenes straight out of a nightmare horror movie—it's wild. He’d be the perfect guy to write a thriller set in the middle of nowhere, maybe somewhere deep in the Scottish Highlands... though honestly, even some remote parts of Montana would work just fine.

Go for it, baby! 🎉

Yeah, he's great for fiction—and for hate speech on a PDF that isn't even meant for literary works.

Edward Wilson82 said:Biological programming isn't set in stone—it’s influenced by everything from genetics and prenatal stuff to hormones, how you were raised, and even social circles. But for most people, that biological baseline stays pretty standard, leading to a natural aversion toward various sexual orientations. That's why you see pushback against homosexuality in every society on the planet, no matter how hard political correctness tries to bury it.

If that’s the case, then why don't I feel that same aversion—at least, not in its full capacity? Why wouldn't that be something hardwired or natural for me?

Brandon Rivera2 said:So what exactly is it that homophobes don't get about gay people that makes them act that way?

Well, I suppose that’s a much larger conversation. You actually had an entire thread dedicated to homosexuality—looking at it from a psychological standpoint—where all sorts of topics regarding sexuality and homophobia were dissected. Maybe you could revisit that one to get a better sense of how homophobia actually manifests in the real world, and perhaps see the different levels it can take.

Some homophobes don't even realize that homosexuality is relatively common within the population and is a natural occurrence—not some kind of psychological disorder—while others seem to think that gaining equal rights doesn't threaten the rights of heterosexual people, nor does it pose any risk to children or the traditional institution of marriage and family. 🤷

Brandon Rivera2 said:Can a person even be well-informed and still be homophobic?

Not really—unless they happen to know something I don't. Based on everything I understand about homosexuality, there aren't any valid reasons to respect them, yet at the same time, efforts are made to ensure they still don't receive full civil rights. I suppose that qualifies as homophobic behavior—declaring one thing while acting against them in practice. None of the rights they're fighting for—things like marriage, inheritance, or parenting—can be disputed by any facts regarding those individuals themselves.

Edward Wilson82 said:It’s not about being averse to homosexuality—it’s about the behavior.

I'm not sure I follow.
Is that innate? To whom is it innate? For me, for instance, it isn't.

If these old-timers—these true experts and pros—keep this up,
we might as well just rename the thread to "The Mysterious John and his funny little PDF: It's someone else's problem, so trolling is fair game."
What exactly is "homophobia"? in Psychology ·
Brandon Rivera2 said:Man, psychology is basically the funniest PDF and the most hilarious "science" out there... and I'm not even sure what kind of joke this is supposed to be... besides, they moved the whole thread over here anyway, since it originally started in the sex section...

If that’s how you feel, then maybe this thread isn't really for you either. You could always head back to the other section and vent all about that "joke" you mentioned, so you don't clutter things up here while we talk about homophobia: http://www.forum.us/showthread.php?t=510977

And then Endymion17 shared some moderator insights regarding how much of a troll you are with that rather convenient account of yours, and then just vanished. 😢

Brandon Rivera2 said:That would be such massive discrimination against everyone who doesn't want to be serious all the time. Like, does anyone actually expect this forum to be 100% serious? Plus, what even makes this trolling...

And what about not holding people accountable when they ignore the forum rules or certain guidelines?
I mean, from my perspective—and I could be wrong here—what you’ve been doing in this thread is actually quite rude. It feels like a sort of sneaky way of slipping in those tired, recycled street jokes about gay people, all while masking it under a seemingly sophisticated opening post meant to clarify terminology or, I suppose, some kind of psychological mechanism. You were very careful at first, presenting everything as if you were just deeply concerned with the underlying logic of the topic rather than just trolling. But then, once enough people joined the conversation, the whole thing just unraveled.
If you're looking for a laugh, maybe stick to the joke threads.

Some things are just painfully obvious.

Yeah, it really is incredible how we fell for a troll. 😬

Anyway, if the account was created specifically to mess around, why hasn't it been permanently banned by now? I'm actually asking that seriously.

Edward Wilson82 said:Some people just refuse to accept that the aversion to homosexuality—or any other sexual orientation, including things like incest—isn't about society or culture. It’s biology. Period. They’re basically just fighting themselves at this point, not the Church or some bunch of conservative Neanderthals.

So, you're saying an aversion to homosexuality is something we're born with?
What exactly is "homophobia"? in Psychology ·
Edward Wilson82 said:Incestophobia is just like it—any psychological or behavioral resistance someone feels when facing examples of incest, whether it's through real people or more abstract things like media or statistics. Because our views on sex and gender are socially constructed, this reaction is essentially programmed by the culture we live in. Broadly speaking, it's just societal unease regarding incest.

In practice, an "incestophobe" would be anyone who feels uncomfortable about incest or resists the reality that it exists or the notion that it could be viewed as something natural.

In essence, yes.
It’s probably not really the point of this discussion, but that's just how it is. The prohibition against incest is essentially a social contract—one that has been around for so long that we don't even realize it's a construct anymore, even though it is, and even though we fully understand why such a construct was created in the first place.
