Do we trust the experts when the "facts" keep shifting?
in Psychology ·
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much weight we give to official narratives. It feels like every time a major global event happens, we're told one thing is a settled fact, only for a few years to pass and suddenly everyone is questioning the baseline assumptions. It’s exhausting to try and keep up with what’s "proven" versus what’s just the current consensus of the moment.
It makes me wonder if we’re moving toward a world where institutional authority just doesn't carry the same weight it used to. I used to look to specialized experts as the final word, but now I find myself digging through raw data or looking for dissenting voices just to get a sense of the full picture. It’s a lonely way to consume information, but I don't know if I can go back to just taking things at face value.
Does anyone else feel like they've lost faith in the "official" version of reality, or am I just becoming a professional skeptic?
