The gatekeepers of "prestige" cinema
in Other Arts ·
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how much of the "indie" film world is actually driven by these massive international sales agencies. We love to celebrate the "bold, distinctive" debut director who just emerged from nowhere, but the reality is that most of these projects don't even make it to a major festival circuit without a powerhouse distributor already having their hands on the rights. It feels less like a discovery and more like a pre-planned rollout.
It’s a bit cynical, I know, but it makes me wonder how much of what we see as "artistic breakthroughs" is actually just really efficient business maneuvering. You see these deals getting struck right before a big premiere, and it feels like the "discovery" was decided months ago in a boardroom in Europe or LA. It’s hard to stay purely immersed in the magic of a new voice when you realize the machinery behind it is already spinning so fast.
Do you think the hype around festival debuts is mostly organic, or is it just high-level salesmanship disguised as art?
