I was browsing some music sites earlier today and I noticed how aggressive the marketing for "super deluxe" box sets has become lately. It feels like every time a legendary band announces a new release, it’s not just a reissue—it’s this massive, multi-disc, hardcover-bound behemoth that costs as much as a nice dinner out.
Don't get me wrong, I love physical media. There’s something about holding a heavy vinyl or a thick book that just hits differently than a Spotify stream. But sometimes I feel like the industry is banking on our nostalgia to push these overpriced bundles. I remember back in the day, you'd just buy the album, listen to it, and be done. Now, you feel like you're missing out on the "complete experience" if you don't spend a hundred bucks on a box set filled with a dozen unreleased takes and some fancy packaging.
I find myself constantly weighing the value. Is that one extra demo really worth the extra $50? Or am I just being suckered by the shiny packaging?
Do you guys actually hunt down these massive box sets, or do you just stick to the standard reissues?
