I’ve always leaned toward more high-impact stuff—you know, sports where you’re actually throwing hands at someone's face and all that. My ex was my coach for both Tai Chi and kickboxing, so I’ve sat through plenty of sessions (mostly just watching), but based on what I saw down there, it looks pretty solid... My only real worry is losing the little bit of muscle I actually managed to build. I’m 180 cm and only about 128 pounds, so let's just say I could definitely afford to put on some weight. 🙂
I train in kickboxing, and I also dabble in two different styles of Taekwondo—ITF and WTF. To be honest? One is perfectly fine, while the other leaves a lot to be desired.
If combat sports aren't really your thing, why not look into technical disciplines like Aikido or Judo? I’m not from your neck of the woods, so I have no clue which local gym would be closest to you, but I'm sure someone around here can point you in the right direction.
You can also get into Kendo, Jiu-Jitsu, kettlebell training, and all sorts of other stuff. Of course, one membership covers everything, just like Jacob Sullivan9 said.
Benjamin Cox61 said:Hey there! I could use some advice! I'm looking into self-defense classes, and honestly, I'm interested in picking up some kind of martial art too. I've spent a little time digging around online to learn about different styles, but I just ended up drowning in all the info out there, and now I'm totally stuck trying to figure out which one might actually be a good fit for me! I'm 22, and I haven't really done any serious sports before; I weigh about 123 lbs and I'm 5'6", and I'm definitely not in the best shape right now—which is actually my biggest motivation to finally get moving! Which martial art should I go for? Am I too old to start training? Can anyone recommend a good gym or club in the San Diego area?
Thanks so much! ***
Besides Krav Maga, I'd also suggest Aikido. There are several clubs in the San Diego area. Go check out both and see what you actually like. 🙂 If you need links to specific clubs, just ask here.
It’s just like Laura Turner4 told you. Most clubs handle the kimonos and gear through their own channels, so just ask about the costs and how to get everything once you actually start training. Focus on getting the kimono first. As for weapons? Most gyms have plenty of equipment you can borrow when you're starting out—assuming you're doing weapon work, obviously.
I have no idea what kind of catalog you’re talking about, but try searching the Ebooks thread over on the martial arts subforum. You might find what you're looking for there.
This guy used to practice Arnis, though I can't say for sure if he actually taught it. It’s pretty old news, so my memory isn't exactly sharp. As for a club? You definitely won't find one here in the States if that's what you're looking for. Maybe someone else here has a better lead? 😢
Muay Thai indeed. Maybe wait another year before you even think about touching Krav Maga. It really just depends on what Larry Hayes said you were looking for.
Does anyone know if there are any clubs for tantjutsu, iaido, or anything involving actual weapons? Somewhere in the San Diego area or nearby, obviously.
There isn't a single club in San Diego dedicated to Kenjutsu or Iaido. You've only got Kendo in the area. Check out www.aikido.com for more info.
I know the crew usually gets together on Friday nights to hold their competitions. It’s mostly gymnastics, breakdancing, Capoeira, and stuff like that. Just search for "Friday Night" if you want to find them.

Lol, I doubt he’s going to answer you since he’s based out of LA. There is no JKD in San Diego.😢 Maybe at some random club... but there isn't a dedicated school.
I don’t have anything against teaching people. But I have a serious issue with giving away too much. If you serve everything up on a silver platter, you're just doing their thinking for them. Let people actually make their own choices... if they can manage to absorb the material, fine 😁
Hmm... what do you mean by "rough" like a standard katana? :?
EDIT:
Ah, I see. That was from a ninjutsu club they had over in New Haven. They had the saya and everything. Unfortunately, I have no idea where one actually buys those things.😢
