Leftover needle fragment in my tooth root for 10 years. in Dentistry & Oral Hygiene ·
Hello

About ten years ago, I had a root canal done on my upper right molar,
Everything seemed fine at the time; the filling was placed and all that.
Fast forward a decade: I just had some dental X-rays taken, and my new dentist pointed out that there’s actually a tiny 3mm fragment of an endodontic file stuck in the root of that same tooth. He’s tried to extract it twice now, but unfortunately, he hasn't been successful.
He explained that if he can't get that piece out, my main option might be getting an implant, because there’s an infection visible on the X-ray right underneath where the fragment is lodged, making it impossible to treat otherwise.

Has anyone here dealt with something similar? I would love some recommendations on how to proceed, as I really want to avoid pulling the tooth unless it becomes absolutely necessary.

I've uploaded the X-ray of the tooth here:

Best regards,
