I totally feel you on that, I might just catch the early prelims live and then see how I feel about staying up later.

So, looking at this card, we actually have some fighters coming in with absolutely spotless records—basically untouched so far:
Roberto Sanchez
(7-0-0)
Diego Rivas (7-0-0)
Joseph Morales (8-0-0)
Niko Price (9-0-0, 1NC) Martin Brava
(12-0-0) And then there's this one matchup where two undefeated guys are going to go head-to-head, which I guess is always a bit of a gamble:

The UFC is heading back to Mexico City, and I suppose the main attraction in the flyweight division features two guys who are both arguably on a serious upward trajectory: Sergio Pettis (15-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) and the local hero that all the Mexican MMA fans seem to absolutely adore, Brandon Moreno (14-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC). Right now, Pettis is sitting at number eight in the rankings, while Moreno is right on his heels in the ninth spot.

If you look at Pettis’ last three outings, he actually managed to string together three unanimous decision wins, which is a bit of a turnaround after he dropped a fight to Ryan Benoit a couple of years back when he first decided to move down to flyweight. He originally entered the UFC back in 2013 as a bantamweight, where he went three and two with two bonuses before running into Benoit at UFC 185. But, I guess he's since made up for that by picking up wins over former contenders like Chris Carias and John Moraga, not to mention his win over Chris Kelades.

As for Moreno, after a somewhat shaky start to his pro MMA career with a mediocre 3-3 record, he has gone on this incredible run of 11 straight wins, eight of which ended in finishes. Since signing with the UFC about eight months ago, he’s already racked up three impressive victories and snagged two performance bonuses. He made his big debut at UFC Fight Night 96 last October, where he immediately grabbed a submission bonus for his work against Louis Smolka. Then, just two months later, he scraped out a split decision win over Ryan Benoit at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale in Las Vegas, and his third big scalp was dusting Dustin Ortiz via submission at UFC Fight Night 108 in Nashville—which, naturally, earned him yet another bonus.

After that absolute banger of an event at UFC 214, the UFC is heading over to Mexico City, where I’d venture to say the air isn't exactly doing the fighters any favors. We're talking about an altitude of about 6,700 feet, so things might get a little thin up there.

I guess that might be why they decided to stack the main event with flyweights, since those guys are basically defined by having the best cardio in the game. This event is what we have lined up for the weekend, and then it looks like we're facing a pretty long drought from the UFC, because the next one doesn't roll around until September 2nd in the Netherlands (featuring the Struve vs. Volkov main event).

I honestly think that main event was easily the best fight we saw all last weekend 👍

I have to say, Roehrick really caught my eye too—I mean, seriously, check out that beard 😲 plus he stepped up to take the fight with only three days' notice. On the other hand, I was pretty disappointed with Diakiese (I really expected more from him, I guess), and maybe a little bit with Fortuna too; he had such an impressive debut fighting Hamilton in the heavyweight division on short notice, but he just seemed like a completely different fighter here.

Honestly, it was a pretty solid event, though I have to admit I was expecting a bit more from some of those fighters. But hey, the main event really saved the whole vibe and made the entire night worth watching.

That guy Gaethje is just absolutely wild; he clearly lives for the scrap. I’m not entirely sure if that’s actually the smartest way to approach a fight, but man, the crowd goes nuts for it. And then there was that whole moment at the end where they were trying to climb up the octagon fence 🤣

Yeah, I mean, once Nurmagomedov really got going, it was just total domination; he didn't stand a chance at all after the MJ fight.

Sadly, the Jessica Eye vs. Aspen Ladd match just fell through. Also, the Julian Lim vs. Tecia Torres bout got bumped down to the FOX prelims. The whole event was supposed to kick off right at midnight, but looks like we're pushing back to 12:30 a.m. now.

I haven't really been keeping up with TUF lately, so I’m honestly not entirely sure what kind of shape everyone is in, though I definitely recognize most of the guys from the older seasons of the show. As for Kraus, I feel like we've mostly just seen him hanging out in the corner acting as a coach recently.

I actually had no idea that Gaethje was still completely undefeated—17-0, right? And man, 15 of those were finishes, with only two going to a decision, which is wild. He’s basically the only other undefeated fighter on this card. Now, MJ looked pretty sharp when he went up against Poirier, but I guess he didn't look quite as impressive against Nurmagomedov either—though if I remember correctly, he did manage to catch him a little bit in the first round before Nurmagomedov just took over and dominated the rest of the fight.

It’s honestly pretty tough for me to call any of these fights, because while all those perfect records and stats look amazing on paper, you really have to prove yourself once you're actually inside the UFC; that's where the real pressure is. MJ is going to be the ultimate litmus test here. 👍

Out of everything on this UFC event, the one fight I’m actually looking forward to most is:

imageimage
Marc Diakiese vs. Drakkar Klos

Since they're both currently riding undefeated streaks, someone is definitely going to be tasting defeat for the very first time tonight. I mean, Marc Diakiese is just such a terrifying fighter—he's incredibly fast, super explosive, and honestly just really fun to watch. He's sitting at 12-0, with seven of those being finishes, and he's even managed to end fights within thirty seconds a few times now.

He was especially impressive during that last knockout where he absolutely dismantled Tim Packalen in barely half a minute:

image

That’s why when Diakiese is in the cage, you kind of have to follow that old rule—don't blink, 😁

because things happen so fast. On the other side, Drakkar Klos is holding down a 7-0-1 record with four knockouts under his belt, so I guess there's a pretty huge chance this matchup turns into an absolute banger.

Another fight that looks potentially great is:

imageimage
Gray Maynard vs. Teruto Ishihara

It's also pretty interesting that Jessica Eye is fighting tonight, especially since she's coming off a rough patch with four straight losses. So, I suppose tonight is a massive make-or-break moment for her too. It's a bit of a bummer that Steve Boss is out of the picture, though; he was supposed to face Cannonier, which probably would have been a hell of a fight as well. But hey, the rest of the card looks solid regardless.

So, the weigh-ins went down last night.

Weight cutting results:

The Main Card kicks off on FS1 at 9 p.m. ET.

So, we’ve got Michael Johnson taking on Justin Gaethje in the lightweight division, and honestly, looking at those weights—155 against 155.75—it feels like one of those matchups where you just have to brace yourself for impact. I guess if you're looking for a technical chess match, you might be looking in the wrong place, because when Gaethje gets involved, things tend to get messy pretty quickly. I mean, Michael Johnson is a veteran who knows how to move, but facing someone with Gaethje's level of sheer, unadulterated aggression? It’s a massive question mark. Maybe Johnson can find a way to use his speed to stay out of the pocket, but I don't know, it feels like a tall order when you consider how much damage Gaethje is willing to take just to give some out. It'll be interesting to see if Johnson can manage the distance or if we're just headed toward a total war.
So, we’re finally looking at the TUF 25 finale, specifically the matchup between Dhiego Lim and Jesse Taylor. Looking at the scales, Dhiego Lim came in at 170.5 while Jesse Taylor hit 171, so they're pretty much dead even on weight. I guess we'll just have to see who actually wants it more when that cage door shuts.
So, we've got Marc Diakiese taking on Drakkar Klos in this one, which puts them right around that 155-pound mark, I guess. It’s a bit of a toss-up if you ask me, though I might be wrong. Diakiese has that flashy style that can really catch you off guard, but then again, Klos seems like the type who just stays composed and waits for you to mess up. I mean, it could go either way depending on how the pace settles, but I'm leaning towards a technical scrap rather than a total blowout, maybe. It'll be interesting to see if Diakiese can actually dictate the tempo or if he just ends up chasing ghosts against someone as steady as Klos.
So, we've got Jared Cannonier weighing in at 204 versus Nick Roerrick coming in slightly heavier at 205.5. I guess it’s one of those matchups where you look at the numbers and wonder if that half-pound difference actually matters, though, honestly, in a fight like this, everything is kind of up in the air. It feels like one of those bouts where momentum might be more important than the scale, but we'll just have to see how it plays out.
So, we've got Brad Tavares taking on Elias Theodorou, both coming in at the 186 mark, which I guess means we’re looking at a pretty standard middleweight matchup here. Honestly, I can't quite put my finger on how this one plays out, but it feels like one of those fights where you're just waiting to see if someone finally finds their rhythm or if it's going to be a bit of a grind. Maybe Tavares can find an opening, or maybe Theodorou just stays busy enough to make things awkward, I don't know. It's hard to say for sure, but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens when they actually step into the cage.
So, we've got Marcel Fortuna taking on Jordan Johnson at the 205.5 mark, and honestly, I can't quite wrap my head around how this one plays out. It feels like one of those matchups where you just sit back and wonder if anyone is actually going to come out with a clean face, I guess. You have Fortuna, who is always such an unpredictable element in the cage, and then there's Johnson, who brings his own specific kind of chaos to the octagon. Maybe Fortuna can find a way to control the tempo, or maybe Johnson just steamrolls through whatever rhythm they try to establish, but either way, it’s looking like a wild ride. I mean, at this weight class, things tend to escalate so quickly that you almost expect someone to lose their cool mid-round, though I suppose that's just part of the fun of watching these guys compete. It's hard to call, really; it could go either way depending on who decides to show up more prepared for the grind.

image

The preliminary card kicks off on FS1 at 7 p.m. ET, so make sure you've got your snacks ready by then.
So, we've got Angela Hill taking on Ashley Yoder, and looking at the lines, it’s sitting around 114.75 for Hill versus 115.5 for Yoder. I guess it's one of those matchups where you're just staring at the screen wondering who's actually going to pull it off, because honestly, it feels pretty much like a toss-up to me. Maybe Hill can find a way to outwork her with that volume, but then again, Yoder isn't exactly someone you can just breeze past without consequences. It’s a tight one, I suppose, and I'm leaning toward it being a bit of a grind.
So, we’ve got Tom Gallicchio taking on James Krause at the 170 mark, and I can't help but wonder where this actually goes. It feels like one of those matchups where you're just staring at the screen waiting for someone to make a move that actually changes the momentum, you know? I guess if you look at the stats, maybe there's a clear favorite, but honestly, anything could happen once they step into that cage. It'll be interesting to see how the pacing works out, though I suspect it might be a bit of a grind.
I mean, looking at this matchup between B. Dollaway and Ed Herman, I guess you could say we’re looking at a bit of a weight class crossroads, since one's stepping up to 205 and the other's sitting right around that 205.5 mark. It’s one of those fights where you just wonder if the extra mass is actually going to help or if it’s just going to make everyone move like they're stuck in molasses, though I suppose it's hard to say for sure until they're actually in the cage.
So, we've got Jessica Eye weighing in at 134.5 against Aspen Ladd coming in at 135, and I guess we’re finally getting to this matchup. It feels like one of those fights where you just have to sit back and see if the technical stuff actually holds up against pure aggression, though I'm honestly not entirely sure which way the momentum is going to swing. Maybe Jessica can find a way to control the pace, or maybe Ladd just bulldozes through everything, but I suppose we'll find out once they actually step into the cage.

The preliminary card kicks off on UFC Fight Pass at 6 p.m. ET, so you might want to get settled in before things really start heating up.
So, we've got Teruto Ishihara facing off against Gray Maynard in the featherweight division—well, technically a tiny weight discrepancy there at 145.5, but whatever, I guess that's just how the math works out sometimes. It’s an interesting matchup, if you can call it that, though I'm honestly not entirely sure what to make of it yet. On one hand, you have Ishihara, who brings that specific kind of energy, and on the other, you've got Maynard, a guy who has been around the block more than most. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see if the veteran experience can actually hold up against someone looking to make a statement, but my gut tells me it could go either way depending on how much grit is actually left in the cage that night.
I mean, looking at this matchup between Dhiego Lim and Tecia Torres, I guess you could say it’s one of those fights where you just aren't quite sure what to expect, if that makes any sense? It feels like a bit of a toss-up, honestly. You've got the technicality on one side and then you have to wonder how the momentum might shift once they actually get into that cage. Maybe it'll be a tactical chess match, or maybe someone just decides to throw caution to the wind, I don't know. It's hard to pin down, but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out on the big stage.

So, I just caught the early weigh-in results for The Ultimate Fighter 25 finale, and it looks like we’re pretty much on track for the big showdown. Michael Johnson hit the scale at 155, while Justin Gaethje came in slightly over at 155.75. It’s a tiny difference, really, so I guess they’re both looking good to go for the main event. Everything seems to be falling into place for what should hopefully be an intense night of action.

-

So, looking at the matchups for the co-main and the main event, I guess we should probably talk about what to actually expect when the cage door closes. It’s going to be a heavy night, honestly. Between the co-main and the headliner, there's definitely some serious tension building up, though I suppose it depends on how you view the technical matchups versus the pure chaos factor. I mean, if you're looking for a tactical chess match, maybe you'll find it, but I have a feeling things might get pretty messy before anyone can even settle into a rhythm. Just my two cents, anyway.

The whole damn thing was a total mess:

The Ultimate Fighter 25 finale : Johnson vs Gaethje in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
So, we've got a bit of a smaller UFC event lined up for tonight, serving as the appetizer before the big main course tomorrow at UFC 213. We’re finally going to find out who takes home the crown for the 25th season of TUF. Even though it's technically a smaller card, there are actually some pretty solid names on the roster, so I guess it could turn out to be a pretty entertaining night if things go our way.

In the main event, we have Michael Johnson versus Justin Gaethje—two guys who don't exactly seem to be on speaking terms, which 😁 should make for a really intense, high-stakes matchup.

Here is a quick clip from that press conference they held to kick off the summer season:

The Ultimate Fighter 25 finale : Johnson vs Gaethje (07.07.2017)

T-Mobile Arena | Las Vegas, Nevada

The main card kicks off on FS1 at 9 p.m. ET.

So, I’ve been sitting here thinking about the upcoming showdown between Michael Johnson and Justin Gaethje, and honestly, I’m not entirely sure what to make of it yet. It feels like one of those fights where you just know things are going to get messy, which I guess is exactly why we tune in, right? You have Michael Johnson, who is such an unpredictable force, and then you have Justin Gaethje, who basically exists to turn every octagon into a scene from a gritty action movie. I mean, if you aren't prepared for some serious fireworks, you probably shouldn't be watching this particular matchup. Maybe Johnson can find a way to utilize that speed and elusive movement to stay out of the line of fire, but let's be real—trying to dodge Gaethje is like trying to dodge a freight train that's actively looking for you. It's a massive question mark, and I suppose we'll just have to wait and see if Johnson's technical skills can actually neutralize that relentless, heavy-handed pressure that Gaethje brings every single time he steps into the cage. It's going to be intense, I think.
So, we’re looking at the welterweight tournament final from TUF 25, featuring Dhiego Lim versus Jesse Taylor. I guess you could say things are finally coming to a head here, though I'm not entirely sure if anyone's actually prepared for how messy this might get. It feels like one of those fights where you just sit back and wonder why you signed up for the headache, but hey, that's what we're here for, right? Between the two of them, there's a lot of grit, but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see who actually manages to hold it together when the pressure hits.
I’ve been staring at this matchup between Marc Diakiese and Drakkar Klos all morning, and I guess I’m still trying to wrap my head around how this actually plays out. It feels like one of those fights where you just sort of sit back and wonder if anyone is going to come out with a clean face, honestly. On one hand, you have Diakiese, who has that flashy, almost unpredictable movement that can really mess with a guy's rhythm if they aren't careful, but then again, maybe he struggles when things get gritty. And then there's Klos, who seems like the type to just keep coming forward and making life difficult regardless of what happens. I mean, it's probably going to be a bit of a wild ride, and I suspect we might see some high-level striking transitions, though I'm leaning towards it being a bit more chaotic than people are expecting. It's hard to say for sure, but I guess I'm just waiting to see if Diakiese can actually find his flow before Klos turns it into a grind.
I mean, looking at the matchup between Jared Cannonier and Nick Roehrick, I guess you could say things are getting pretty interesting, though I’m honestly not entirely sure where my head is at with this one. It feels like one of those fights where you just have to sit back and see if the power actually translates, because, let's be real, Cannonier is such a physical specimen that it almost feels unfair sometimes. He’s got that heavy-handed style that just seems to grind people down, whereas Roehrick is still trying to find his footing against this level of elite competition. Maybe Roerrick can pull off an upset if he finds a way to neutralize that pressure, but I don't know, it feels like a massive uphill battle for him. If Cannonier lands early, it might be over before we even get comfortable in our seats, but hey, that's why we watch, right? I suppose we'll just have to wait and see if the sheer strength advantage is too much to overcome.
I was just sitting here thinking about the matchup between Brad Tavares and Elias Theodorou, and honestly, I’m not entirely sure what to make of it. It feels like one of those fights where you're just waiting for something to happen, though I guess there's always that possibility that nothing happens at all, which would be pretty underwhelming. Maybe Tavares can find a way to impose his style, but then again, Theodorou is such a relentless mover that it might just turn into a weirdly paced cardio session rather than a real scrap. I don't know, I'm probably overthinking it, but it's hard not to wonder if anyone is actually going to land anything meaningful in there.
I mean, if you’re looking at the matchup between Marcel Fortuna and Jordan Johnson, I guess there isn't much to dissect, though maybe that's exactly the point. It feels like one of those fights where you just sort of sit back and see who blinks first, which is probably a bit of an oversimplification, but I can't help how it looks to me. You have Fortuna trying to find his rhythm, while Johnson seems like the kind of guy who would just relentlessly pressure you until you eventually run out of ideas. It’s hard to say for sure who comes out on top, but I suppose we'll just have to wait for the Nevada Main card to settle the score and see if anyone actually manages to pull off anything impressive.

The preliminary card kicks off on FS1 at 7 p.m. ET.
I mean, I guess we’re looking at Tom Gallicchio versus James Kraus, aren't we? It's one of those matchups that kind of sits in that middle ground where you're not quite sure if it's going to be an absolute banger or just a really long, grueling technical grind, though I suppose that's almost always the case when these guys step into the cage. Honestly, I can't quite wrap my head around which way this goes, because while Gallicchio has that certain grit, Kraus always seems to have these weirdly specific ways of making things difficult for his opponents. Maybe it'll be a quick decision, or maybe we'll all be sitting there watching them sweat through three rounds of pure attrition, but either way, I guess I'm ready to see how it unfolds.
I mean, I guess we should probably talk about the matchup between Angela Hill and Ashley Yoder, though I’m not entirely sure what to make of it yet. It feels like one of those fights where you're just sitting there wondering if anyone is actually going to land anything meaningful, you know? Maybe Hill can use that movement to stay out of reach, but then again, Yoder has that grit that might just make things messy. I don't know, it's hard to say who really has the edge when both of them are such unpredictable fighters in their own right. It could go either way, honestly.
I mean, looking at the matchup between B. Dollaway and Ed Herman, I guess you could say it’s one of those fights that really makes you wonder what the matchmaking logic was this time around. It’s definitely an interesting pairing, if you’re into that kind of thing, though I suspect most people might just see it as a bit of a grind. I don't know, maybe I'm being too cynical, but seeing B. Dollaway step into the cage against a veteran like Ed Herman feels like one of those classic "test of grit" scenarios where nobody is really walking away feeling like they just watched a technical masterpiece. It’ll probably be a tough, physical scrap, and honestly, I'm just sitting here wondering if anyone is actually going to come out of it looking particularly good, but hey, that's just my two cents on the matter.
I mean, I guess we’re finally looking at Jessica Eye vs. Aspen Ladd, and honestly, I'm not entirely sure what to make of it yet. It feels like one of those matchups where you just sort of sit back and wait to see if someone actually finds their rhythm, because, let's be real, things could go a dozen different ways. Maybe Jessica brings that grit she's known for, or maybe Aspen just manages to dictate the pace from the jump. It's hard to say, really. I'll probably be glued to UFC Fight Pass for this one, just hoping for something more than a tactical stalemate, though I suppose that might be asking too much sometimes.

The preliminary card kicks off on UFC Fight Pass at 6 p.m. ET, so you might want to get settled in before things start heating up.
I mean, I guess we should probably talk about Teruto Ishihara vs. Gray Maynard, though I’m not entirely sure what to make of it yet. It feels like one of those matchups where you just sort of sit back and wonder if the veteran savvy is going to actually hold up against that kind of explosive energy, or if things are just going to get messy. Maybe Maynard can still pull some old-school tricks out of his bag to slow things down, but then again, Ishihara is such a wild card that anything could happen, really. It's hard to say for certain, but I suppose we'll find out when they step into the cage.
I mean, I guess we should probably talk about the matchup between Dhiego Lim and Tecia Torres, though I’m honestly not entirely sure what to make of it yet. It feels like one of those fights where you just kind of sit back and wonder which way the momentum is going to swing, you know? Maybe Dhiego Lim can find a way to control the pace, but then again, Tecia Torres is pretty seasoned, so I wouldn't want to bet against her too heavily if I were in anyone's shoes. It's probably going to be one of those gritty encounters that keeps you guessing until the very end, I suppose.

izvor: So, I was just digging through some of the details regarding the upcoming The Ultimate Fighter 25 finale : Johnson vs Gaethje, and honestly, there is a lot to chew on here. It looks like we’re heading toward the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the Nevada Main card, and if you ask me, the matchups are looking pretty wild. First off, let's talk about the matchup involving Tom Gallicchio. He's set to face James Kraus, which I guess could go either way depending on how they handle the pressure early on. Then you've got the bout with Angela Hill against Ashley Yoder C. B. Dollaway—man, that one feels like it could be a real technical grind, though I suppose anything can happen once the cage door closes. Looking at the rest of the lineup, we have Ed Herman Jessica Eye vs Aspen Ladd on the preliminary card, which sounds intense. And then there's the whole situation with Teruto Ishihara and Gray Maynard; I mean, seeing how those guys match up might be the highlight for some people, especially if you're following the UFC Fight Pass coverage closely. It's also worth noting the presence of fighters like Marc Diakiese, Klos Jared Cannonier, and Nick Roehrick in the mix. There's a lot of talent spread out across this UFC event, including Brad Tavares and Elias Theodorou, who always bring a certain level of grit to the octagon. Even with names like Marcel Fortuna and Jordan Johnson popping up on the Jordan Johnson preliminary card, the depth is just massive. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how the TUF alumni fare against the established vets. It's going to be a heavy night of action, for sure.
