GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
I'm finally back at it. I hooked up the TV via HDMI and managed to get both video and audio working. My computer speakers are still plugged directly into the sound card just like they were before, but for some reason, the audio has completely vanished. It’s driving me crazy. On top of that, I’ve got another headache: I can't figure out how to tweak the settings in my AMD control panel to get a proper 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio when I'm watching movies. Right now, everything looks wonky. By the way, I'm running a 17" monitor through a DVI connection.🤷

Hey there!
I headed over to Links and managed to return the card without any drama. They even offered me a full refund. Apparently, they have the exact same model sitting in their San Francisco branch, and they asked if I wanted them to ship it out here. Honestly? Not worth the wait.
For roughly the same amount of cash, I picked up an XFX HD 6570 1 GB DDR3. One of the employees actually told me that according to the folks on the forums, the card I originally had was basically the gold standard for this price range, so I was prepared to just sit tight and wait for the San Francisco shipment. But then, plot twist! It turns out the returned card was tested and, surprise surprise, it’s perfectly fine. So, I just grabbed the XFX, popped it in, and everything seems to be running smooth so far.
Thanks to everyone for the advice and all the effort. Best regards,
VIVA!!!
P.S. You haven't seen the last of me.🙂

Alright, I’m back at my desk using my old GPU. Everything is running just fine for now. A couple of pages back in this thread, I asked for some advice on what card to pick and laid out my entire setup. One key detail: I’ve got a 350W Advantech power supply. But now that I’m actually looking at the box, it says it needs at least 400W. Given that this thing is basically an ancient relic—which, let's be honest, probably pulls next to nothing—do you think I could actually get away with this PSU?

James Fisher11 said:Most likely you just forgot to plug the power cable into the card itself.

But I literally stated in my earlier posts that I specifically need a card that doesn't require any extra power connectors.???
Actually, looking closer, there isn't even a slot for one.

Hey there!
I just picked up this

And now, get this—my computer won't even boot into macOS. I hit the power button and... nothing. Total silence. I don't even hear that familiar startup beep. It’s like the whole system just died on me. What am I supposed to do now?🙂🤷

I decided to start small. Honestly, I just wanted to patch things up enough so that the situation isn't quite as pathetic as it was before.
I actually weighed about five different options once I realized you could split the cost into interest-free installments on a credit card. I mean, come on—it’s basically like trying to balance a budget when you've got two kids in school and barely enough left for chalk.

Anyway, quick question: does the 5670 need its own dedicated power connector?

Heh, look at that. Lesson learned.🙂🙏🙂

Thanks! Quick question though—would a Sapphire HD 5670 1 GB be a decent fit for $176?

By the way—how do I actually embed a link, like if I wanted to point directly to this specific card on Amazon?

Benjamin King2 said:Look, if you drop that GPU in there, the fan is going to choke out the very next slot because of its size. You should probably move that sound card down a notch. If the GPU fan is pressed right up against the sound card, you aren't getting any actual airflow anyway. It'll just be hot air hitting a wall.

Well, that’s not even the whole story. I've got a TV tuner card sitting right under the sound card. And after that? There's nothing left. It's a dead end.🙂
Heading into the office now. Thx🙂

Why bother with 1 GB of VRAM? With a setup like yours, you aren't even going to touch high resolutions, so that extra memory is basically dead weight—it just inflates the price tag for nothing.

Look, my thought process was simple: if I'm building a new rig, I want to dodge the massive upfront cost of a high-end GPU right out of the gate. Besides, neither the kids nor I are hardcore pro gamers; we don't need the bleeding edge of technology just to get things running. Thanks!🙏🙂

P.S. I’m assuming I can just clear out those various cable bundles and USB headers sitting under the card. Once I move them down toward the sound card, I’ve got about 35mm of breathing room left. Is that enough clearance for a newer card? Some of these modern ones look absolutely massive.

Thanks. Any chance you could recommend something with 1GB of RAM? I'm leaning towards Linksys because they let me pay in interest-free installments. Man, this recession is killing me.🙂

Hey there!
My /8600 GT/ just kicked the bucket, and honestly, I’m not in the mood to drop a fortune on a whole new rig right now. My kids aren't exactly demanding high-end specs yet, so I’ll probably hold off on a total system overhaul for a bit.
Here’s what I’m working with: an Athlon 3.0 single-core
2 gigs of RAM
a 350 W PCI Express
PCI Express
The most demanding thing they run is currently Crysis
Looking to spend about $167
Links
I don't want to mess with a new power supply, and I need 1 GB of DDR3
If I end up doing a major upgrade down the road, I'd love for this part to be something I can actually reuse in a new build later on.
Thanks in advance!🙂
