Best video compressor? in Software ·
rowdybadger18 said:Not necessarily. Apparently, the folks over at OiV are planning to switch from DVB-T to DVB-T2 using the HEVC codec sometime soon.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. The people running OiV are pretty eccentric. They aren't even using H.264 or AAC anymore, and they're acting like HEVC is an absolute requirement for DVB-T2.

They'll probably find another way to screw people over by forcing everyone to go out and buy new DVB-T2 tuners. :-)

Then again, from my perspective, it’s actually fine. It just means I'll have to add DVB-T2 support to my current software, which basically translates to more cache usage on my PC. 👍

Actually, I'd say it's mostly relevant for UHD. For standard HD, everyone still just uses H.264.

It’s actually already implemented, and it can leverage the GPU just like H.264 does.
But honestly, given the resolution, the OP probably doesn't need anything more advanced than H.264 anyway. If they're running Windows, they likely already have it via MFT.

Another way to go would be to encode the footage using DV or something similar, then mess around with re-encoding via ffmpeg. Maybe they could find a sweet spot for quality versus file size using the x264 encoder.
Which monitor should I get? in Computer Peripherals ·
Paul Miller64 said:I'm trying to learn a bit about monitors.

I need a 24'' IPS. Ideally, I want something cheap that isn't total junk. It would be better if I could find it at a store in San Francisco or just somewhere with reasonable shipping costs.

I found this one, but I don't know anything about monitors. All I know is I want at least 24'' and it needs to be IPS, because that's what a friend told me.

1) Cheap and "not junk" don't really exist in the same sentence.
2) You should probably give me an actual budget. If you're looking to spend maybe $100-$$667, then the specific model doesn't matter much, since everything in that price range is pretty low-end.
3) What are you actually using it for?
4) Your friend might be right, but they might not be. Everyone seems obsessed with IPS, though a PVA panel is arguably way better for reading text or vector graphics.
