New build under $1,250? in Desktops ·
haha, I just hope they actually release a few decent cases that can even fit a 40 cm card... that thing is massive. anyway, does anyone know if there's a place where I can drop off my old PC? A lightning strike fried the whole thing, obviously. Wondering if anyone would be willing to take it off my hands and swap it for some cash.

You don't actually need to blow through your entire budget. You could end up with a machine that outperforms what you've listed right now, all while saving several hundred bucks.

I don't know.... I prefer my own peripherals... maybe I'll take that monitor though... I'm going to grab the Thermaltake Commander MS-I case because it looks better than yours—it has LEDs and a large window, and the price is basically the same... also, you didn't include an SSHD... the only thing I'd consider is suggesting a weaker power supply if it keeps the performance steady while gaming, or maybe a lower-end motherboard... but everything else is non-negotiable. haha xD

I'll be making the purchase on Monday because of some scheduling issues. Here is the final configuration before we close this thread:

-CPU: Intel i5 4440.....$455
-MOBO: ASRock B75 PRO3M.....$169
-RAM: KINGSTON 8GB 1600MHz White Series.....$224
-GPU: Gigabyte R9 290.....$959
-SSHD: SEAGATE HDD 1TB 64MB 7200 SATA 6Gb/s.....$156
-PSU : Fortron Aurum S PSU 600W, 80+ GOLD.....$242
-OPTICS : LG SATA Bulk Black 24x.....$45
-CASE : Thermaltake Commander MS-I USB3.0x1.....$133
-AUDIO : Logitech Speaker System Z313.....$95
-KEYBOARD: Zalman K400G.....$61
-MOUSE: Genius X-G500.....$47
-MONITOR: ACER 23" LED IPS.....$375

-The total comes out to $2961, including shipping from Best Buy... and maybe a trip to Denny's...
-I know I overspent by $133... if any part is unnecessary, like the motherboard, could I just go with an H81 instead? That would lower the price. I think it's worth paying extra for a high-quality power supply like this one.
-Also, is the case large enough to fit everything?
-The monitor is 1080p with an IPS panel. It should be decent quality even though it was about a thousand bucks.
-If I were buying this today, I'd pull the trigger. But that's how it is.

It’s high quality, but man, it’s way more expensive... hmm. I’m heading out to buy today, so if anyone has any more tips, let me know.

haha you guys decide, but regarding the case being too narrow... it would be great if it had more vents and some lighting, or at least felt high-quality. As for the monitor, I'd probably go with an Acer 23 IPS...

I'll be happy to post some photos as a thank you later 🙂 ...but why go with IPS? Isn't that a more modern panel type? Will it actually provide a better picture? As for the graphics card, it's a fixed component, so I'd have to swap out the whole case... I honestly have no clue which one to pick, though it would be great if it had blue lighting and, of course, stayed within the budget of this 🙂

Since I'm coming from a Small town, the distance is pretty much what you mentioned. I’ll be at college that day anyway, so I can just grab it from my old man—no big deal. The main thing is getting down to the city center since it's a little cheaper there.

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure, but I honestly think things might be cheaper downtown. I can't double-check right this second since I'll probably just drive over later anyway, so it doesn't matter much. Also, does Futura offer free delivery across the whole metro area?

That sounds great then 🙂

Right in the middle of it... that's the spot. This looks pretty much perfect to me. I won't bother pasting the whole shopping cart here because it's getting messy... but basically, does everyone agree this build beats my initial AMD setup? It seems obvious to me that Intel is just more reliable for gaming—lower power draw, runs cooler, and plus there's the Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 which absolutely crushes everything else, just like mellowtiger83 said, haha. I don't think I'll die without an SSD either; people say this hybrid SSHD is the sweet spot for balancing speed, price, and storage capacity. My only real question is about these 1333 MHz RAM sticks... isn't 1600 MHz the standard, or does that extra speed actually matter? Thanks again to everyone for spending the time helping me out. For now, I'm sticking with this configuration. 😁

So, here’s my take on this . This setup is currently in my cart at Futura, but looking at Best Buy, I think I could actually pull off a better deal there... though I'd need to swap out the keyboard and mouse. Thanks for taking the time to look this over. I'm planning to pull the trigger this Friday, so I've still got three days left to do some digging.

diners ...on top of everything else,
New build under $1,250? in Desktops ·
mellowtiger83 I have to say, I really like your suggestion... the i5 costs about the same as an x8 but it's better and more powerful. Plus, I won't even need to overclock the CPU since I'll be pairing it with an r9 290, which is total overkill, along with an SSD that's basically a necessity. So, with this setup, would I be able to run everything on max settings at 60 fps? It seems like a much better move than going with the FX 8 and the r9 280 x.

Personally, I don't see the point in dropping the extra cash on an SSD right now. According to some videos on YouTube, it’s only about 0.30 faster than an SSHD. I’m planning on overclocking eventually, so I'll probably need the upgrade then... I know the i5 is the superior choice, and if I could just move everything over to the 4670k, I would, but I'd have to sacrifice my graphics card performance in the process. And yeah, regarding the keyboard, mouse, and case—I'd really prefer to stick with what I've already picked out. I just like them, so thanks. 😁

Hey there!
So, I'm thinking about picking up a new PC at Micro Center for around $1,300, and this is the build they suggested to me:

-processor: FX 8320
-CPU cooler: Zalman CNPS10X OPTIMA
-motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
-RAM: KINGSTON H-X 2X4 GB 1600 MHZ
-SSHD: SEAGATE 3.5 1TB SATA 3 SSHD
-graphics card: VTX r9 280 x 3GB UEFI V2
-optical drive: LITE ON DVD-RW SATA
-PSU: FORTRON FSP RAIDER 650W 80+ SILVER
-case: Zalman Z9 U3 Midi tower, black
-monitor: Acer 23" IPS FHD
-keyboard: Zalman keyboard K400G, black
-mouse: Genius X-G500 gaming mouse, macro, 2000dpi
-speakers: Logitech Z313 2.1 speakers

Basically, that's the total $2833 if I buy everything through Micro Center... The computer will be used mainly for gaming, movies, schoolwork, and other basic stuff. If anyone knows where I can get something cheaper or a better build for the same amount of money, please let me know. This Micro Center might be a bit of a drive for me, but if the quality is good, why not? Also, I need to use a credit card since I don't have the cash on hand. Thanks!! 😍
