Just in case anyone else is running into this, I finally figured it out. I didn't actually use Handbrake to fix it—I switched over to a free tool called Any Video Converter instead. To make it work, you’re also going to need Subtitle Edit, which is another free program. First, open your subtitles in Subtitle Edit and resave them using UTF-8 encoding. Once you load those into AVC, your special characters should show up perfectly. Plus, the settings let you tweak the subtitle position and font size if you want. You can technically do the first step with Handbrake (opening them in Subtitle Edit and choosing UTF-8), but unfortunately, Handbrake doesn't give you any control over how the subtitles look or where they sit on the screen.

Quick question if anyone happens to know... I just installed Handbrake. You really have to mess around with it a bit to get the hang of things, but man, you can actually shrink movie file sizes down to something reasonable. My issue is specifically about burning subtitles into the video since that’s an option in there. The problem is, when I burn them in, my special characters disappear. They look fine in the original .srt file, but once they're in the video, they're gone. Also, when I go to select the language, American isn't even listed—I tried selecting something else entirely, but nothing works. There are some other settings under the subtitle section for different encoding types like ISO or ASCII, but I have no clue if those are what I need. Anyone have any ideas?

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction here... I somehow managed to disable the page counter at the bottom of my screen in Word 2003. You know, that little indicator that shows something like 3/10? Now I have no idea how to toggle it back on. Just to be clear, I’m not talking about adding actual page numbers to the document itself, just that status bar display that tells me which page I’m currently working on and how many there are total. Any help would be appreciated!
