Walter Jackson48 said:Basically, you just split your document into two distinct sections: the first covers pages 1 through 4, while the second starts from page 5 and runs until the end, allowing you to reset the numbering.

Here is the step-by-step process: You simply move your cursor to the very end of the fourth page, navigate to the Insert tab, select Breaks, and then choose Next Page. After that, head over to the View tab and click on Header and Footer, which will open a specific toolbar filled with various icons. Once you place your cursor within the designated area, such as the Footer, and decide where you want the page number to appear, make sure to disable the Same as Previous setting by clicking its corresponding icon on that Header and Footer toolbar. From there, stay on that same tab, click the Format Page Number icon, and in the Field Start At box, enter the number 1. Then, simply click the Insert Page Number icon to place the number 1, and finally, exit the view by clicking Close. That should do the trick entirely. (Please note this applies to the 2003 version, though the workflow is likely identical in Microsoft Word 2007).

I am currently using Microsoft Word 2007, though I personally find the 2003 version much more intuitive, so since I had a moment to spare, I went ahead and tested the solution in 2007 for you:

Microsoft Word 2007:
1. Open your Microsoft Word document and move your cursor to the end of the fourth page.
2. Go to Page Layout, then Breaks, and select Next Page.
3. Navigate to Insert, then Footer, then Edit Footer, and ensure you click the Link to Previous button to turn off the Same as Previous setting located above the Footer frame.
4. Go to Page Numbers and select your preferred placement (for example, Bottom of Pages), return to Page Numbers, select Format Page Numbers, set the starting value to 1 in the appropriate field, hit OK, and then Close. And just like that, you are finished.

Thank you so much!🙂

I truly appreciate all the help, 🙂
Hello there,

I am quite new to this community and I am not entirely certain if this topic has been covered before, but I am currently struggling with page numbering in Word 2007. Specifically, I need my numbering to begin on the fifth page so that it displays as "1." I managed to find a tutorial online to guide me through the process, yet I have run into a bit of a snag. While the fifth page does correctly show up as the first, the sixth page also insists on being the first, and then the numbering doesn't actually progress to "2" until the seventh page. If anyone could kindly provide a step-by-step solution, I would be incredibly grateful, as I am admittedly a bit of a novice when it comes to these technical matters.🙂

Thank you all so much in advance!
