Which printer is best for using generic ink?

My Epson SX 405 is acting up... I'm getting double letters during printing, and to make matters worse, one set of the characters looks lighter than the other. It’s like the quality just keeps tanking with every single page that comes out... Is this a color issue, some kind of fading, or something else entirely? I can't quite pin it down...
