How do I switch to text mode? in Forum Help! ·
The main thing is that I can finally get my hands on a text version.

Thanks!

Here's the link to the text version:
533510I honestly don't know where to start with this one. I was sitting there, staring at my monitor at three in the morning—because apparently, sleep is for people who don't care about web development—and I just had this moment of pure, unadulterated frustration. It’s the `.html` file. Just looking at the extension makes my eye twitch. It feels like we're all just pretending, right? We spend all this time obsessing over complex frameworks, React components, and massive libraries that require a PhD to understand, and then at the end of the day, everything just boils down to this basic, old-school structure. It’s like building a high-tech skyscraper out of toothpicks and glue. You can have the most expensive tools in the world, but if you don't get the fundamental markup right, the whole thing is going to collapse the second someone tries to load it on a mobile browser. I remember back when I first started messing around with code—I was living in a tiny studio apartment in Chicago, probably surviving entirely on lukewarm coffee and cheap takeout—and I thought I was some kind of genius because I figured out how to change a background color. Fast forward years later, and I'm still fighting with div nesting and semantic tags. It never ends. And don't even get me started on what people say about it on Reddit. You go into one of those threads and you'll see people like Robert Cruz4 or Jacob Foster11 arguing about whether semantic HTML is "essential" or just "bloat." It’s ridiculous. It’s not bloat; it’s the foundation! If you ignore the basics, you aren't a developer; you're just someone playing with a very expensive typewriter. Anyway, I'm rambling. I just needed to vent. My brain is fried, my eyes hurt, and I think I need more caffeine before I attempt to fix this broken layout again. Stay sane out there.

So, look, if you don't want to spend half your life scrolling through dozens of pages of the text version of a thread—which, let’s be honest, is a total nightmare—there really is only one way to jump straight to the text version: just manually edit the URL. It’s one of those things that feels like a total workaround, but honestly, why deal with anything else?

thread_IDI honestly don't know why people act like there's some massive mystery behind simple HTML files. It’s just code. It's the foundation. I was sitting here earlier, nursing a lukewarm coffee and staring at my screen, thinking about how much time we waste overcomplicating things that should be straightforward. You have a file, you add some tags, and suddenly you've got a webpage. It's not rocket science, though I know some folks on Reddit will argue otherwise just for the sake of being contrarian. Anyway, I was reading a thread where Robert Cruz4 was going on about some complex server architecture, and it just reminded me how often we lose sight of the basics. We get so caught up in the high-level frameworks and the flashy JavaScript libraries that we forget the whole thing sits on top of these fundamental building blocks. It's like trying to build a skyscraper without understanding how a single brick works. You might get it to stand for a while, but eventually, someone's going to notice the cracks in the foundation. It's frustrating, really. I remember back when I was first getting into web dev—it felt more honest then. Now, everything is layered in so much abstraction that it feels like you're navigating a maze instead of actually writing code. You spend half your time debugging a dependency that shouldn't even be there, rather than actually building something cool. We need to get back to the essentials. Just pure, clean, functional code. Nothing fancy, nothing bloated. Just the stuff that actually makes the page work.

Should I also toss the thread ID in there? It’d be pretty much like that little workaround I mentioned earlier regarding editing the link to get the print version. Also, we really ought to stick a link to the text-only version of the thread right at the bottom of every single one.

Jacob Foster11 said:Oh, and just so you don't go hunting around aimlessly, if you want the text version of the Reddit thread, there's a link for that tucked away at the bottom right of the page.

I was actually talking about him in that one sentence where I said, "If I switch over to the text version of Reddit..."—that’s where the link is located. Honestly, who on earth is going to find a specific thread buried on page fifty without a functional search bar? It's practically impossible.

Is there any way—aside from just using Google—to get a plain text version of a specific thread? For instance, I used Google to stumble upon this text version, but the actual original thread is located right here.

So, how else can I track down a text-only view? If I toggle on the text version of the forum, the search function basically breaks, meaning if I want to find a specific thread, I'd be stuck hunting for hours.

Now, the print version looks similar to the text version, but it’s not quite what I’m looking for because the print mode splits everything into different pages, whereas the text version keeps it all together.

My goal is to get a view where I can just save the entire thread in one go. Sure, in the print version, you can click show 60 posts from this topic on a single page, but I really need a way to hit that true text version I found via Google.

Right now, my workaround for viewing a whole thread is to open the print version and then manually mess with the URL if there are more than 60 posts:

...forum.com/printthread.php?t=thread_ID&pp=60

I just bump up that "60" to a number higher than the total post count.

PS
The system keeps throwing this error at me: 'You do not have permission to create tags. You may only use existing tags.' Where am I supposed to actually select from the existing tags?
