Thanks for the help, guys, as always. I guess I'll just grab whichever one ends up being a better deal since they both seem pretty close in performance.
So, if I go with that one that has the 6GB GTX 1060, I probably won't need a better power supply, right? I guess... is it actually worth spending more on that card? Is it really that much better than the RX 570 4 that was $567 suggested?
I wouldn't use it at all. This R9 270 X card that died (and yeah, he's pretty sure it's totally fried now) isn't even four years old and it's already toast.
My budget is pretty tight... since Christmas is right around the corner and this wasn't really planned. I have $833, so paying in installments works best for me.
Is this actually any good?
GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
That's what they told me at Best Buy. Or maybe you guys know something else around the $150-$$567 range?
I'm running a Corsair CX 500 power supply right now. I guess I don't need to upgrade that, right?
Hey everyone,
So, I recently picked up a Ryzen 5 2600, a new motherboard, and 8 GB of RAM... everything worked fine for about a month, but now it looks like my graphics card finally gave up the ghost: an NVIDIA GeForce R9 200 Series (2048 MB). It’s about 4 years old (same one from this thread). I can't even get into Windows 10 after the logo appears—just a black screen. When I finally managed to boot into Safe Mode, I started seeing those lines on the screen, which usually means the GPU is dead. I ran a malware scan, but nothing came up.
I guess, what would you recommend for a new graphics card that works well with a Ryzen 5? We play all sorts of stuff here at home, like Assassin's Creed Origins, FIFA, and Far Cry 5.
Best Buy is pretty close to me. Thanks in advance! 🙄
Awesome. Thanks for the tips. I guess I'll just wait for that new CPU then. No biggie.
It's just kind of a bummer because my current rig runs everything pretty well, even though it's getting old. It even handled the latest Call of Duty and PES just fine. But this Assassin's Creed Origins won't even launch on it.
Is Admin still the best bet for buying gear?
It says Corsair CX 500. I guess it might have lost some power over the years, maybe.
Thanks so much, guys. I think I'll go ahead with that plan. Just keep what works and swap out whatever needs changing.
If I decide to grab a faster new drive and just keep this one as a backup, plus a new power supply, any recommendations on what to pick up?
I mean, I still want to be able to play games... everyone at home does. Like anyone else, I'm looking for the cheapest way to make it happen, but if it's time for a whole new rig, then maybe I'll go that route. Or if I can just squeeze more life out of this current one by upgrading, I guess I'd do that instead.
I really need some advice since I don't know much about the technical stuff: is this upgrade even worth it, or should I just build a new PC for maybe $2,000 and call it a day? I've also been thinking about getting a console.
What would you guys do? If you think a new build is better, could someone suggest some parts and stuff? Thanks.
Hey everyone,
Assassin's Creed Origins just came out, and I can't even get it to launch. From what I've been reading, my Intel Core i7-2600K is missing SSE 4.1 and 4.2, which I guess all the new games are going to require now.
Here is my current setup:
PC:
System Type ACPI x64-based PC
OS Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Installed Service Pack Service Pack 1
Internet Explorer Internet Explorer 9
DirectX DirectX 11.0
Motherboard:
Processor Intel Core i7-2600K, 3200 MHz (16 x 200)
Motherboard Name unknown chipset
Motherboard Chipset NVIDIA GeForce 770, Intel NetBurst
System Memory 8192 MB (DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM)
DIMM2: G Skill F3-10666CL9-4GBNT 4 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (8-8-8-22 @ 609 MHz) (7-7-7-20 @ 533 MHz) (6-6-6-17 @ 457 MHz)
DIMM3: Kingmax FLFE85F-C8KM9 2 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (9-9-9-24 @ 666 MHz) (8-8-8-22 @ 592 MHz) (7-7-7-19 @ 518 MHz) (6-6-6-16 @ 444 MHz)
DIMM4: Kingmax FLFE85F-C8KM9 2 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (9-9-9-24 @ 666 MHz) (8-8-8-22 @ 592 MHz) (7-7-7-19 @ 518 MHz) (6-6-6-16 @ 444 MHz)
BIOS Version Phoenix Technologies (06/18/10)
Serial port Serial port (COM1)
Graphics:
Video Card NVIDIA GeForce R9 200 Series (2048 MB)
What should I do? Maybe I could upgrade some parts, or maybe it's just time for a whole new build? Or I could just stick with a console, I guess.
Thanks for any advice. 👍
Found them, slot 3 and slot 4 look identical...

It says everything is fine except for the graphics card you guys suggested, the Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus and CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K. Oh, I also forgot to mention that when I was installing the NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti, I picked up a cooler that was recommended to me, so it’s all running a bit quieter now.
Thanks so much. 👍
Hey everyone, back again so soon. I ended up grabbing that AMD Radeon R7 265 based on your advice and it's actually working great, thanks again! 👍
But now I'm noticing that some of the newer games, like Assassin's Creed Unity or the new Dragon Age, and just stuff I play at home, they seem to need at least 4GB of RAM, sometimes 6GB... and the recommended specs say 6 or 8GB. I've only got 4GB right now.
My setup is from that third post in this thread, and I'm running: 1 x DDR3 4GB (2x2GB) Kingmax, 1333MHz, FLFE
I guess I'm wondering what kind of memory I should look for if I want to keep things pretty cheap? 😲
Thanks guys, I'll probably grab one of those when I get the chance. :-)
Budget? Well, the smaller the better, I guess...😁
I'm not really an expert when it comes to overclocking. I don't know much about that stuff, maybe. 🤷
So, just a new graphics card and we're set? Or should I look into adding more RAM too?
Hey everyone, popping back into this thread after three years. I finally finished paying off my PC, so I guess it's time for some upgrades. 🙄
So, I'm working with the build mentioned in the third post here, though mine uses an Asrock motherboard.
Do you think it makes sense to upgrade this so I can play games smoothly for another 2 or 3 years, or maybe it's just better to buy a whole new rig?
If upgrading is doable, I'd love some part recommendations or a full build list... you guys were such a huge help last time.
Thanks in advance! 👍
I guess you guys convinced me... I mostly stick to strategy games, maybe a shooter here and there, and plenty of Madden. My wife is more into RPGs like Dragon Age or The Witcher. So, yeah, a PC is probably the way to go, I just needed that extra nudge. I still have my old PS2 for God of War and Gran Turismo. 😉
I've got an Acer x223w 22" monitor, so I'll probably just start with that... taking things one step at a time.
Thanks again for all the help. 🙏
Thanks everyone, you guys were a huge help... I think I'll definitely stick with the admin side. 👍
I was thinking about another option, though it's maybe a bit off-topic: do you think it's better to just keep this old PC for browsing and movies... and maybe grab a console like an Xbox for gaming instead? What do you guys think about that, or is a PC still the way to go? I don't really know much about consoles. 🤷
Time for a new PC build, I just need a case since I have everything else. My budget is around $4,000-$1500. Money is a bit tight right now, though... mostly for multimedia and gaming. It's important to me to get everything from one single shop, just to be safe.
I checked out some local stores nearby:
Vemil:
Best Buy:
Which of these looks best? Maybe there's something better for that price? I have a friend who can put the parts together if needed, but I really need to buy from one store.
Thanks in advance...👍
