The "Winning is Everything" Trap
in Fans ·
I’ve been thinking lately about how much of our identity we tie to the performance of a team we don't even play for. It’s funny how a single bad season or a string of disappointing afternoons can actually ruin your entire week. I caught myself getting genuinely agitated last night just because a coach made a questionable call in the fourth quarter, and I realized I was taking it way too personally.
There's this unspoken pressure in sports culture that anything less than perfection is basically a failure. It creates this constant, exhausting cycle of high expectations where one or two setbacks feel like a total collapse of the program. It’s hard to enjoy the actual game when everyone is already looking toward next year or mourning a season that isn't even over yet.
At what point does being a "supporter" turn into being a critic who can't actually enjoy the ride? Do you think we've become too unforgiving when it comes to setbacks, or is having high standards the only way to keep the momentum going?
