Here is my report from the concert in Chicago:
I find myself in complete agreement with the reviewer—Secret Chiefs 3 absolutely tore the house down. I managed to capture a quick video clip, which you can find at the bottom of the post. I’ve also included a link to the full photo gallery captured by our local pro, Maestro Reaction...
I found this whole sequence of events just as baffling as everyone else. 😉 Mate had already mentioned on the forum that Liars were planning to launch the Zedan Uho Festival, but then, only a few days later, official word dropped that they’d be heading out on a mini tour across Australia right when that concert in NYC was supposed to happen. Regardless, I’ll be there the second their return to the States is officially confirmed.
If memory serves, there was a plan for the Liars to kick off this year's Zedan Uho Festival, but they ended up heading to Australia instead of playing in Chicago...
In my opinion, this is their best work yet. While the previous record was the definitive choice for live performances, this one stands out as a nearly flawless studio achievement. The songwriting feels much tighter than before, and the rhythm section finally captures that live energy—specifically through more frequent and impactful drum fills. The production quality is top-tier. My only gripe is those three overly mellow tracks; they felt totally out of place and simply didn't fit the band's signature style.
After everything I’ve just read, I think I’m definitely going to have to rethink my stance on Zorn...
Does anyone know who his Japanese influences are? Specifically, which Japanese musicians has Zorn been drawing inspiration from?
So, were there any Zorn fans at the show? I couldn't swing the trip from New York City right now, though for a while there, I was seriously considering going into debt just to make it to this concert. Regardless, there were plenty of folks in attendance from New York City😉.
All this chatter about his fee seems completely pointless to me. The Man is a legend of the downtown scene (whether people admit it or not), so I don't see why he shouldn't want to earn a decent living after decades of playing music that isn't exactly radio-friendly. He has every right to it. As for the talk about exploiting grindcore or whatever image he has, I don't have much to say, and these theories about building a cult of personality are news to me.
How much is David Douglas going to make, and is he looking for a five-star rating? (asking Tyler Grant86)
In any case, I'll definitely be at the Douglas concert; I'm actually more excited for his work. He's released nothing but phenomenal albums over the last five years, and I have high expectations for this latest lineup—I don't expect to be disappointed.
