What can I say... either you have no clue what you're doing... or you're installing stuff you don't even know how to operate.

Ahem, ahem:

Look, this isn't some magic fix for your software. It just saves the user profile.

Honestly, the thought of reinstalling everything from scratch sounds like a nightmare. If there's a way to do it without digging too deep into the installation settings—since I really don't want to mess anything up without a clear guide—let me know. Thanks.👍

An in-place upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7 isn't on the table. You're stuck doing it the long way: you'll have to upgrade to Vista first, and then move from Vista over to Windows 7.

Oh, right. Again. Everyone’s basically on vacation at the office lately, work is dead, so I’m just sitting here nursing one cup of coffee after another...

Jason Harris5 said:Personally, I’m betting this comes down to format.com. Is that even a 64-bit extension? From what I've gathered, only the EXE files actually care about whether they're running on x86 or x64.

Honestly, who knows. I had some guy tell me once—and he wasn't even being serious, just venting—that his wife left her old extensions sitting right on the computer case, and then everything just went to hell. Maybe I should ask him if she was using 32-bit or 64-bit extensions when the whole thing crashed.

Benjamin King2 said:Noah Foster57, look, I wasn't talking about standard antivirus software. I was specifically referring to those specialized removal tools you have to break out when your main antivirus just sits there staring at the infection without actually doing anything about it.

I remember hearing somewhere—honestly, it might have been some old tech blog or a thread on a forum back in the day—that if you're in that situation, the absolute fastest and most effective way to scrub everything clean is using some sort of format.exe utility. Does anyone know if there's an x64 version of that tool available?

quiethound10 said:Benjamin King2, maybe walk us through that logic a bit more? I've been running Windows 7 x64 since last month and honestly, I haven't run into anything even remotely resembling a virus yet.

And what about those adult sites? You know, the... questionable corners of the web. I heard somewhere—some guy at the office was rambling about it—that because 64-bit versions have a larger address space or whatever, they basically provide more room for malware and junk to hide. More addresses, more open doors for the creeps to walk through. Personally, I think it’s only worth making the jump if you're planning on running heavy stuff like Adobe Photoshop.

Yeah, right. That same genius once tried to convince me that Black people have black blood cells. Just pure, unadulterated nonsense.

Good luck with that!

Ryan Torres27 said:Can someone please, for the love of God, walk me through how I'm supposed to fix this mess using that damn VMware software?!!

Not a chance. Look, VMware is just a virtualization tool. It isn't some magic wand that can fix your driver issues if they actually exist in the first place.

Just install your OS, get all your programs running, and then run a full backup. No need for Microsoft or any of that other junk.

stormycanyon4 said:Look, what I actually needed was for the setup to automatically repair my current installation by swapping out all the system files while leaving my apps and data completely untouched—exactly how you could do it back with Windows XP.

Let’s get one thing straight: Windows XP isn't Windows 7. You won't find that functionality in Windows Vista or Windows 7 because the core installation architecture is fundamentally different. With an XP install, you're basically extracting .cab files into specific directories. But with Windows Vista and Windows 7? Everything changed; they use a single, massive image file deployment. There are countless advantages to doing it this way.
The whole way we handle deployment and backups for Vista and Windows 7 has been overhauled from the ground up. Honestly, it's your own fault for not looking into how these newer systems actually work.
