that 5770 from Smith you mentioned is quite a find 🙂

My thanks to you both. So, are you saying either of these will handle Diablo 3 decently? I'll keep repeating myself, but that is truly my only concern.

It has been quite some time since I last visited an American PC forum. 😁
After deciding to embrace the console lifestyle about a year ago (🙂), I parted ways with my old gaming rig and replaced it with a machine intended strictly for web browsing and listening to music.

However, since there is one specific PC exclusive that has caught my eye—Diablo 3—and it has become increasingly obvious that the game is actually quite impressive, I find myself needing to return to the PC world, if only for a while.

I suspect that most of my current hardware will suffice for Diablo 3, with the exception of the GPU.

Intel Pentium @ 3.10GHz
2GB Kingmax DDR3
Corsair CX430 430W
24" Monitor 1920x1080
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT

It is clear to me that the monitor might present some challenges, as I am looking for the most budget-friendly GPU capable of running Diablo (ideally at 1080p). Having been somewhat extravagant with my spending in other areas recently, I am prepared to go all out $167, whether I opt for something used or brand new.

Just download Hiren's boot CD. Once you have it, burn it as an image, leave it in the drive, restart the computer, and boot from the CD. Under the disk testing tools, find your specific drive manufacturer and run a long test if one is available.

If that passes, then... try flashing the BIOS. If that doesn't solve it either, my only remaining thought is a driver issue... perhaps try installing a different version, maybe an older one.

Okay, I'll give all of that a shot tonight when I get home! Regarding drivers, when I installed Windows 7, I didn't actually have to install any drivers because everything—sound, network, and so on—worked perfectly out of the box. I only installed the ATI CCC, nothing else.

PS. It would also be wise to check the capacitors on the motherboard (see if any are bulging or otherwise damaged).

I actually checked the capacitors recently while I was cleaning out my junk drawer! I'll run the HDD test tonight. Any specific software you'd recommend? P.S.—I neglected to mention that once I roll back to Windows XP, the freezing stops entirely; everything runs perfectly.

I did, but since I wasn't in the mood to sit there for hours—and honestly, I was running low on memory anyway—I just picked up a new 1GB stick. I swapped out the old 2GB module for the new one, but the issue persists. My first instinct was the RAM, too, though I'm starting to doubt that's the culprit unless this new stick arrived defective, which seems unlikely.

So, here's the situation... I seem to be facing an issue that feels entirely unique, or at least incredibly rare, as I haven't come across anyone else describing anything similar. To give you some context, back when the beta (build 7000) first dropped, I installed it and was genuinely impressed; during those few months of testing, I didn't encounter a single crash or error. However, once I transitioned to the final release, the trouble started. After a successful installation, the system freezes up after about 30 minutes. The cursor locks up, and nothing works—not Ctrl+Alt+Del, not the sleep key on my keyboard—nothing besides a hard restart. Then, upon rebooting, the exact same thing happens: after roughly 30 minutes, it freezes again. I have already attempted ten different versions of Windows (both x64 and x32), both of which apparently work fine for everyone else. I'm completely out of ideas, so if anyone has any insight, please help... Specs: DFI Lan party DK790 FX-dark, AMD Athlon x2 5000+ @ 2.6Ghz, 3GB RAM, ATI Sapphire HD4830.
