Anyone still running Windows 7?
in Software ·
I need some expert advice here.
My new laptop just arrived with Windows Vista pre-installed. Honestly, I’ve always used Windows XP and been perfectly happy with everything—stability, workflow, virtual drives, you name it.
But this Vista version? It’s just not clicking with me, and now Windows 7 is finally hitting the scene.
What are the actual, tangible benefits of moving from XP to Windows 7? To be blunt (and I'm no idiot), it took me fifteen minutes just to hunt down Windows Explorer in Vista.
Regarding performance, I know Windows 7 on x64 is supposed to be faster, but driver issues—like getting a printer to actually work—are still a headache, and it feels like things won't truly settle down for a while.
My gut feeling is to just wipe this thing and install a clean version of Windows XP Black Edition, but I want to know: what is the real upside of going with Windows 7 Ultimate (x86)? Is it just raw speed?
Also, can I install the new OS without losing my current setup? I'd like to keep this Vista installation tucked away somewhere since I already have the license.
Do I absolutely have to wipe the drives and format everything before installing the new OS?
I realize you guys might have covered this over the last fifty pages of posts, but everything is a mess right now. If someone could provide a serious answer for me and anyone else facing this dilemma—especially since Windows 7 has only recently started popping up on torrent sites—it would be much appreciated.
Best regards,
