Dealing with spondylolysis: Advice/Tips?

I have been living with this diagnosis for two years now, though my pregnancy and subsequent maternity leave have certainly complicated things... I discovered that wearing a back brace offers some relief from the pain, and once my postpartum period concludes, I plan to seek further consultation with a neurologist to see where we stand. Prior to my pregnancy, I sought help from a chiropractor, but it proved to be an exercise in futility. What I am truly interested in is whether one can return to competitive sports following surgery, and what the actual rehabilitation process entails.
We received the official diagnosis just last week. After his MRI confirmed the nerve impingement during practice, we initially hesitated to take any decisive action, but we are currently seeking a second opinion. We are deeply unsettled by this news, given that our son has been an athlete since he was six years old; he lives for soccer and possesses genuine talent. It was devastating to witness the look on his face as his ambitions seemed to crumble before him. The physician who delivered the diagnosis advised strict rest for six to eight weeks. Should the pain persist, we will have to discuss surgical options. As for athletics, he mentioned that recreational play might be possible, but nothing more. He also suggested that perhaps physical therapy or massage over these next six weeks could mitigate the discomfort enough to prevent issues lasting until his mid-thirties. He remained somewhat noncommittal about surgery—noting it might not even restore him to professional levels, though he didn't rule it out entirely. We are placing a great deal of hope in a chiropractor who insists there is a way forward; we are heading there tomorrow to hear their assessment.
