Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 560 Ti 170 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts

TDP isn't actual consumption—there's a difference.

James Castillo8 said:Generally speaking, NVIDIA has always held the edge with AA and AF—performance can drop by as much as 30% on ATI cards—so just stick with a GTX.

Actually, quite the opposite—AMD takes the lead once you turn on AA, thanks to more efficient ROP units.

Thomas Miller3 said:What do you mean they aren't? I've always considered them decent enough—I’ve been running an i7 920 and a GTX 260 on a single 550W Chieftec for a year and a half now. I actually asked about this exact setup back then, and nobody suggested swapping the PSU. 🤷

It would be even better if it didn't have to carry that entire load 😁

Chieftec units are solid, but they just don't hold a candle to Seasonic or Antec...

Mark Brooks72 said:Guys, quick question

Can a Core i5-750 fully handle an EVGA GTX 480? 😕

Of course it can.

GeForce GTX 460 or Radeon HD 5770? 🤷

The 768MB model edges out the 5830—slightly better, really—while the 1GB version actually keeps pace with the 5850. Both are a significant step up from the 5770.

If you're already hunting down an AGP card, just go with NVIDIA—ATI’s drivers for AGP are notoriously bad. You'll see plenty of people complaining about screen blackouts or games just freezing up entirely. I can tell you from experience—I dealt with those exact same issues on my 3650 and couldn't fix them to save my life.

Timothy Rivera5 said:At that point, I might as well just grab another one of the same model I already own—it's redundant. I'll probably just go with the new Vapor-X 5850. It looks solid enough, and the cooling setup seems decent.

Right, I forgot to mention that, in my view, the 5870 is a terrible value. A decent overclock on a 5850 will match a 5870 easily—and it's about $700 cheaper--$267. Just get the reference 5850 and call it a day. You don't even really need the Vapor-X; those ATI 5XXX cards run pretty cool in general.

Timothy Rivera5 said:Sure, that one's decent—but it’s only 1GB. Honestly, it feels like paying a premium just to bridge the gap between two current cards.

If I were buying something brand new, I'd insist on at least 2GB.

Just grab the 5870; it's the best value you'll find. And don't get hung up on VRAM—anything over 1GB is mostly marketing fluff. You can run just about anything at standard settings in Full HD with 512MB, so 1GB is overkill. Just go with what cosmicfox31 suggested. 🙂

dustytiger19 said:I'm also thinking about getting the Liquid Cooled version—assuming they actually have it in stock by late next week. One more thing: if I order a full tower and a monitor from Micro Center, do they actually assemble everything for me, or am I just getting a bunch of boxes to deal with myself?

Also, regarding direct payments for free shipping—does it go straight to my doorstep, or am I picking it up at the post office? Just looking for some real-world experience here.

Thanks. 👍

Yeah, they'll put it all together and drop it right at your door—they're fast, too. As for that Liquid Cooled card, it runs cooler than the standard model, though honestly, it's hard to say if that matters much for the GeForce GTX series—those tend to run pretty warm regardless.

dustytiger19 said:Which HD 5770 would you recommend from what's currently in stock at Best Buy?

I'm putting together a new build—everything else will be balanced around whichever card I pick.

Thanks!

Grab the Force3D if you want the cheapest option—otherwise, just wait until the EVGA shows up.

Chloe Alvarez said:Thanks—feel free to throw out any other suggestions my way 😉

Is this silent component actually efficient on its own—and how long until I’m looking at another replacement?

The GPU that CNN recommended is a total steal for your budget. Unless you're running high-end demanding software, it'll probably last you quite a while...

Grab the 512MB version—this card won't even touch 1GB of VRAM anyway, so anything more is just dead weight. Plus, you'll save a few bucks 🙂

The Radeon HD 5750 is a significant step up from the 5570—though, honestly, you could probably squeeze a 5770 into your rig, or even a 5850, which absolutely crushes both the 5750 and the 5770 😉 So, as Thomas Martin4 suggested, just start a new thread and we'll put together something much better than any pre-built setup.

Thanks guys—I'll just go ahead and grab those 400 watts then. 🙂

So, I’ve settled on the Radeon HD 5850 paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500—planning to run them off a Corsair CX400W. Are we absolutely certain this setup won't buckle under pressure? I'd rather not deal with a total system meltdown. 😉 I'm thinking about pushing the CPU toward 3.5 GHz, though I'll leave the GPU at stock for now—it handles everything on very high settings just fine as it is. 🙂

What's your take—would an AMD Radeon HD 5850 run alright on a Corsair 400W CX?
