Wacom graphics tablet

I am planning to purchase a Wacom Intuos4 PTK-640 Medium A5. My intention is to utilize it for professional work—specifically, high-end 2D illustration. In England, the price sits at roughly $340, which is $200 more affordable than what we see here in the States. Consequently, I intend to ask a friend who is returning from London this Easter to pick one up for me.
However, prior to committing, I require an unbiased assessment from those who possess genuine experience with these tablets.
Without intending to cause offense, amateurs often perceive such hardware as mere toys and are easily impressed by superficial features. What I am seeking is the perspective of professionals... where does this device fall short? Is there any truth to the claim that the nibs wear down prematurely? Furthermore, is there noticeable lag? (referring to that slight latency between the physical stroke on the tablet and its manifestation on the screen).
Thank you in advance.
