It’s getting a little unsettling... I was just sitting there watching some shows on the TV when suddenly, from the other room, I heard the distinct startup sound of Windows😕😕. I have no idea what happened. I went to check on the PC, only to find it had rebooted itself😕, even though I had left it completely idle😕.

Douglas Cook9 said:It’s most likely just some driver nonsense. When you finally wrap up a gaming session, the CPU and GPU cool down instantly, and the power draw drops right along with them.
If everything is happening exactly as described, I wouldn't jump to hardware failure just yet.

Besides, it's hard to blame the hardware since everything is brand new. It ran perfectly fine under Windows Vista, so I'm leaning toward a driver issue or something similar... And I'm just reporting what happened...

What percentage is your CPU fan running at when you're seeing average temperatures?

I haven't a clue 😁 nor do I really care, since I don't see the fan speed being much of an issue...
I've actually dialed it back down to 2.80GHz, because it started rebooting on me again while I was just watching TV...

Daniel Nguyen3 said:So, you're actually hoping to push past 2.9GHz without bumping up the voltage? Honestly... that's a tall order.

It might be smarter to dial it back to 2.6 or 2.7 GHz just to avoid a random reboot right in the middle of a game.

(I’ve settled on 2.7 GHz myself; I have no desire to stress the chip at 2.8+...)

The clock speed isn't really the issue here—was it running at 2.2 GHz when the restarts first started happening?

I have no intention of bumping up the CPU voltage just yet...
I'll try leaving things exactly as they are for a while. If the performance stays this way, then maybe I'll consider taking some action...

Jesse Alvarez32 said:Windows Vista is absolute garbage compared to other versions of Windows. The only redeeming qualities are the UI and those 3D window effects.

Come on, it isn't garbage. It actually has its advantages.
It’s more secure, supports DirectX 10, and handles various modern features...
The aesthetics aren't everything. Honestly, having used both Windows XP Pro and Vista Ultimate, I actually find Vista better. It ran quite smoothly for me without any major issues... aside from a few small programs failing to launch...

Edward Peterson70 said:Honestly, Windows is giving me hell too. Since yesterday, I get this message every single time I try to log in: "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting." 🤷
I’m going to have to reinstall everything, which is a pain because I just finished getting my current setup perfectly tuned and polished 😢

I don't know, I'm actually missing Windows Vista right now
It actually felt smoother and faster...
And here I was, thinking I'd be making my life easier by downgrading from Vista Ultimate back to Windows XP...
Plus, I've got another issue...
Every time I shut down the computer, it tells me a drive—either D: or E:—is still open, so I just have to sit there and wait...
I have to admit, Vista was better, even without having those top-tier graphics drivers installed...

Edward Peterson70 said:😕 could you elaborate a bit more

What I mean is, say I'm playing Max Payne 2, and the system crashes right after I close the game—but it doesn't happen every single time.
It’s pretty random, so it isn't a constant issue.
Or, I'll just be browsing the web or typing something up, and then suddenly the whole thing restarts. It basically happens whenever it feels like it. Today, the only time it actually rebooted was while I was playing Max...😕

So, I’ve been dealing with an issue since before I overclocked my E4500 from 2.2GHz to 2.93GHz:
my PC just randomly restarts every once in a while.
Any idea what might be causing this?
It’s been happening ever since I switched back to Windows XP from Vista.
I'm not entirely sure where to look; I thought maybe it was Service Pack 3, but the crashes started even before I installed that.
I have no clue what the culprit is, though I doubt it's the power supply. I'm running a 400W FSP unit, which really should handle an HD 3870 without breaking a sweat...
What else could it be?

Any help would be appreciated...

Kyle Sanchez4 said:What was the temperature right before the reset?

I'm not entirely sure. As soon as I hit the power button, it rebooted within three to five seconds. I suspect the temp was sitting somewhere around 50 degrees or even lower...

In everyday tasks, you won't notice much difference; it’s not like macOS is suddenly going to boot up in a single second 😁

How loud is your CPU cooler running?

I set it to 3GHz and went to check the temps:
it finally loaded up (after about 5 seconds), I was just about to check the temperature and then... BAM!
The whole system just rebooted...
So now I've dialed it back down to 2.93GHz.
I don't hear anything particularly loud from the processor, and my case only has two 80mm fans and one 120mm fan.

Edward Peterson70 said:Just push it all the way and set it to 3GHz. 😁
You’ll never get it as hot as when you're running it with Dad...

Heh, that’s what I was thinking.
I'll try tomorrow; it's getting late. Though, it honestly surprises me that I can't tell any difference between running at 2.2GHz versus 2.9GHz...

Just wanted to share a quick update: I’ve got the E4500 overclocked to 2930MHz (running at 266x11) on the stock cooler. After about two minutes of testing, the temperature peaked at 63°C.
Everything seems to be holding up fine so far.😁

darkowl72 said:Check it using Intel's TAT... and it might not even be anything strange. Maybe the processor isn't heating up enough to trigger the fan speed increase? Once you push it harder, the temps climb, and then the fan finally kicks into a higher gear...

Temps are back down to 29-32C now.
I'm not entirely sure what happened, but after I uninstalled and reinstalled TAT, Vista just refuses to run it; it keeps throwing an error saying TAT has stopped working...
I'm having the same issue with ATY Tray Tools—it won't let me launch it at all.
Maybe I should try bumping the CPU overclock up to around 2.80GHz just to see if the temperatures end up lower or higher?

So, I just decided to throttle my E4500 back down from 2.75GHz to 2.2GHz just to see what would happen with the thermals.
At 2.75GHz (11x250), I was seeing temps sitting right between 29-33°C.
But now that I've dropped it to 2.2GHz, the temperature has jumped to about 40°C.
That seems... counterintuitive...
I'm tracking everything using HW Monitor and Core Temp.

vividhound19 said:Has anyone here actually messed around with overclocking the Athlon X2 5000+ BE?
I’ve read somewhere that you can push the frequency up to 2920 MHz, but there isn't much info on how much extra voltage is required to get it there...

LINK
There was some discussion about overclocking this specific chip over at this link; it seems pretty straightforward. You should be able to break past the 2.9GHz mark without too much trouble, too...

The Sensorview looks pretty terrible
Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
I'm not entirely sure, but here are the core temps:
core#1:29-32C
core#2:29-32C
Feels like I'm sitting on top of Mount Everest...
EDIT:Checked the BIOS as well, and it's hovering right around 30C

I managed to overclock my E4500 to 2.970MHz
the memory is running at 833MHz
CPU temps are fluctuating between 48 and 65 degrees Celsius, which I've been monitoring via Sensorview.
I'm just using a stock cooler right now—does that temperature range seem okay?
Also, do you think the system can handle these settings long-term without issues...
The motherboard is a Gigabyte P35-DS3
