Something to kick things off.

There’s just no way I'm finding a GSM shield for under $50—once you factor in the sales tax and shipping costs—so I've officially given up on that idea.

I just spent some time looking over those GSM shields, and it turns out they’re a perfect fit for the Uno R3—but they won't work on my Arduino because the pin layout is just slightly off.
So, I'll most likely just grab a solid Uno R3 clone from DX or Banggood and pick up a separate GSM shield from somewhere else. As for the Breadboard and jumper wires, I'll have to figure that part out later.

It’s arriving in a week.
The Arduino is decent enough, but honestly, what really puts me off is that the dimensions aren't standard. I know I’ll have to make a trip to Digi-Key to pick up some extra parts, but I’m not looking to go overboard here—I'm hoping to keep the extra work to an absolute minimum.
I found a massive pile of different sensors over on Banggood (way more variety than what you find on eBay), so I was thinking about pairing them with a GSM module if I can snag one for a cheap price and cobble together some kind of monitoring device.

Hey there, I'm trying to figure out which move is actually smarter—picking up an Arduino kit for $73 or just grabbing an Arduino Uno R3 kit from somewhere like DX, Banggood, or eBay for around $50 including tax?
I need this for my senior project, but since I haven't fully locked down the concept yet, I'm still a bit in the dark about exactly which sensors I'll end up needing.
