...Because all those things that made Hybrid Theory so sweet—those dreamy melodies, their (sort of sugary 🙂...) lyrics that somehow avoided being cheesy, and the singer's gorgeous voice 😍 used exactly when and how it needed to be...everything that made me fall in love with practically every song in that collection...they somehow missed the mark with this new one. Now, where they claim to have grown musically and lyrically, it feels to me like they've actually taken a few steps backward. Musically, they've gotten caught in a loop of standard pop-rock melodies following in the footsteps of U2 (whose influence is impossible to ignore), while trying to occupy this space between irredeemable romantics for soulful lovers and a stadium band for the masses (which, I guess, fits into their business side of "progress")—which is almost impossible unless you're Chris Martin 🙂...Lyrically, the message they're trying to get across to the audience feels more like a collage of rhymes than actual deep thought...And finally, vocally—because they didn't dare (or couldn't quite pull it off, though that doesn't really matter...) use the fact that they can sound completely different from everyone else when they want to, given that the singer truly has such a unique, beautiful, and gentle voice...instead, it's like they decided to do the exact opposite—to sound as much like everyone else as possible...

..I don't want to be harsh, because this definitely isn't the worst album I've heard—not this year, nor ever—and I'll certainly listen to it again hoping to find common ground with it. But, with very few exceptions, the magic they once had is definitely gone... 😢

Following U2's lead...hey hey, slow down a second... go listen to U2 from 1980 through, I don't know, 1995, then come back and tell me what similarities Coldplay actually has with U2. If U2 is their inspiration, fine, but that doesn't mean they play like them....come on now.
