Jesse Sullivan5 said:I was just browsing through some fascinating commentary regarding the psychological nuances of attraction—you know, that deep-seated, often inexplicable pull we feel toward certain people—and it really got me thinking about how gender dynamics play out in modern American dating culture! It’s such a labyrinthine subject, isn't it? One minute you think you have a handle on what makes someone "magnetic," and the next, you're spiraling into a debate about subconscious cues and social conditioning. The article I stumbled upon dives into this idea of what women actually look for in men—not just the surface-level stuff like a nice car or a solid career (though let's be honest, stability is a plus!), but those deeper, more primal qualities that trigger an instinctive response. It touches on these complex layers of personality and presence—that certain "je ne sais quoi" that can make one person stand out in a crowded room from even a distance! It reminds me a bit of what we were discussing the other day—remember when ambertinker41 mentioned how much "energy" matters in a first encounter? Exactly! It’s all connected. We try to rationalize it with logic, but there's always that underlying, almost biological current driving our preferences. Whether it's confidence, kindness, or just a specific type of wit, it's a wild, wonderful, and sometimes utterly confusing puzzle to solve. I'd love to hear everyone's take on this—do you think we're driven by these ancient instincts, or is everything just a byproduct of how we were raised in society? Let's get a discussion going!

ruggedfalcon62 said:In Windows 7, the menu just says "format." My point remains exactly the same: when you run that process, the data stays on the hard drive. I’ve been saying this from the start. Where exactly is this "low-level format" option in Windows 7? I’m hearing about it for the first time now. I am talking specifically about formatting within Windows 7. What kind of formatting we are actually dealing with doesn't really matter, because the data isn't actually gone. You're just pulling ideas out of thin air. Hahaha. 😵

From what I’ve gathered while scouring the web, that low-level formatting tool seems to be about as useful as DBAN. Hah.

If you find yourself staring down a corrupted drive that refuses to cooperate, you might want to take a look at this tool from HDD Guru. It’s a Low-Level Format tool designed to wipe a drive clean—I mean truly, fundamentally clean. When standard formatting fails or leaves behind stubborn partitions that just won't budge, a low-level format can be the nuclear option you need to reset everything to zero. It essentially clears out all the data, including the file system, leaving you with a completely blank slate. Is it overkill for a simple file wipe? Probably. But when a drive is acting possessed or you're prepping hardware for a fresh start, it's a solid utility to have in your toolkit.

I’ve said it time and again: a standard format doesn't actually wipe your data from the hard drive. If you want that kind of destruction, you need specialized tools like DBAN or something similar. Yet, here you are, insisting that a low-level format clears everything out automatically. Isn't a low-level format essentially just another way of using the same type of software as DBAN?🙂

A low-level format? Let’s be honest—that isn't even remotely what happens when you select the formatting option during a Windows 7 installation. Hahaha. 🤦

I am talking about formatting Windows 7 during the actual installation process... haha.

Farmers...

Pure comedy.

Farmers.
Haha.

That’s not even half of it, haha.
Classic.
Get a grip, you absolute clowns!

Hilarious.

Formatting wipes every existing file on the hard drive. If you format a drive that currently holds data, that data is gone.

Now we're really seeing the depth of your IT expertise...🤦

And what exactly are you "erasing" by formatting a brand-new drive that has nothing on it?

If you were being remotely reasonable—and if I could be certain you aren't just trolling—I would explain the actual mechanics of formatting and why people claim data isn't technically "deleted" during the process. But frankly, I don't have the energy for it.

We’ve just uncovered some groundbreaking news. Apparently, the most effective way to speed up your OS is to simply wipe it clean with a sledgehammer.

Formatting wipes all existing files on the hard drive. If you format a drive containing data, that data will be gone.

Now we finally see just how much expertise you actually have...🤦

Wait, haven't you been arguing that formatting doesn't delete files until now?
I'm genuinely confused here—does formatting delete everything or not?

ruggedfalcon62 said:When you format a hard drive or delete a partition, you're usually only deleting the file system, making the data invisible but not gone. A file recovery program or special hardware can easily recover the information.

When you format a hard drive or wipe a partition, you're typically just clearing the file system. The data stays there; it's just invisible. Any decent file recovery software or specialized hardware can pull that info right back.

as noted by our resident IT expert, John Doe

Now, an actual computer science professor might correct you: formatting isn't about destroying the file system—it's about creating one.

Simply wiping the drive isn't enough to truly purge Windows from your system. To get rid of it completely, you're going to need an exorcism.

Pure comedy. I'm eagerly awaiting your rebuttal, "doctor." It's been a week already, and you still haven't come up with an answer...🐔

It’s a pretty widespread misconception. I’ll admit, even I initially thought ruggedfalcon62 was being serious.

ruggedfalcon62 said:I haven't run into any issues at all. I'm running two machines with Windows 7 and both are performing perfectly. My only advice? Make sure you use the Service Pack 1 version. If you install the base version without it, you'll end up chasing endless updates later. Using the SP1 installer just gets everything sorted right from the start...

If I go ahead with an installation that lacks SP1, will I need to wipe the drive manually before updating to the Service Pack, or is a standard format enough? I'm asking because the last thing I want to deal with is a black screen.

Jason Harris5 said:Thanks for the heads-up, ruggedfalcon62... hopefully this works out. I do have one question, though. Does it strictly need to be an original Windows 7 license? I've heard some talk about how those "unactivated" versions lack proper drivers and end up causing headaches for people. 🤷

It depends. If you're wiping the drive entirely, a non-original copy might pass, but if you're just doing a standard format, you really ought to stick with an original license.

Tyler Richardson72 said:What kind of drivers are we even talking about? You really think you need Windows drivers just to install Ubuntu? 🙄...

Technically, yes, though you have to format everything first. It's clear that ruggedfalcon62 won't touch Ubuntu unless they wipe their Windows partition beforehand.

It’s pretty obvious why Windows 7 stuck around. If it hadn't, how exactly would Ubuntu even function?
Anyone who has ever messed around with an Ubuntu installation knows the drill: you have to get Windows set up first, wipe the drive, and only then can you actually install Ubuntu to ensure the drivers play nice.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Ahaaaa... I see where I went wrong. I completely misunderstood you. I thought you meant Ubuntu wouldn't run on a totally wiped drive, rather than just a formatted one. My mistake.
Of course it works exactly the way you described. How else could Ubuntu function if those leftover Windows drivers weren't still sitting there on the disk after formatting? It’s simple logic, really: Linux can't operate without those Windows drivers, even if they're just remnants left behind from a previous installation.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Is Ubuntu failing you because you left some Windows 7 drivers lingering on the drive after formatting?
I can't think of anything more foolish I've heard in a long time.

ruggedfalcon62 said:God, you guys are tedious. Let me explain something so you can reach your own conclusion about whether formatting actually wipes Windows...
So, here's the deal. I installed Ubuntu as my OS. Before that, I wiped the entire hard drive clean. Every bit. Yet, every time I booted Ubuntu, I was stuck staring at a black screen, even after running updates. Later, I formatted the Ubuntu partition, installed Windows 7, and realized some drivers weren't working properly, so I ran Windows 7 Update to fix them. After that, I formatted Windows 7 and went back to Ubuntu. Everything worked perfectly. No issues. It turned out to be motherboard and graphics drivers. So, now tell me, since you're all such experts: why does Ubuntu work fine on top of a formatted Windows 7, but fails on a completely wiped drive? Logically, it’s because the Windows drivers were still there. What are you all lecturing me about when you clearly have no clue? Hahahaha

I'm eagerly awaiting your brilliant and witty rebuttal...😵

Yeah, sure, you're right. Your Ubuntu worked because those Windows drivers remained on the disk after the format.

🙂
