The "Live Update" obsession is ruining the moment
in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I was watching a tournament over the weekend and couldn't help but notice how much the vibe has shifted. It used to be that when people went out to play a round or attend an event, they were actually *there*. Now, it feels like everyone is playing a dual role: they’re experiencing the moment, but they’re also simultaneously acting as a live news reporter for a group chat back home.
I had a similar thing happen last summer during a hiking trip with my brother. Every time we hit a viewpoint or finished a trail, he’d spend ten minutes wrestling with his phone to make sure the right people saw the photos and knew exactly how we were doing. It’s great to share successes with family, but sometimes the constant digital tethering makes it feel like the experience isn't "real" unless it's being broadcasted in real-time.
Is it just me, or is this constant need to keep everyone updated—even during quiet or competitive moments—starting to kill the actual enjoyment of the activity? Do you think we've lost the ability to just be present anymore?
