GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Alexander Moore67 said:You’ve basically got two paths here. You could grab a 6700XT right now for around $550 and deal with some bottlenecks in certain games—though in others, it won't be much of an issue at all.
The other route is investing in a new CPU, motherboard, and memory. With $1667, you can't really do both at once.

Thanks for the input.
If I decide to go the route of upgrading my CPU, motherboard, and RAM... what kind of combo would you suggest? Something that'll stay relevant for years to come... since I can always pick up a new GPU down the road...

Hey there,
I’ve been chewing on the idea of upgrading my GPU. Right now, I’m running a GTX 1650, but I’ve really had my sights set on an RTX 3060... The thing is, my processor is an Intel I3-9100F, and I can't help but wonder if that's going to cause a major bottleneck. I'm definitely no expert here, so I figured I'd ask for some advice... My budget is around $1667.

Here is what I'm working with:
ASRock H310CM-HDV S
Intel I3-9100F 3.600GHz
16GB DDR4 - 2X8 GB
Gigabyte P1000GM 1000W PSU

It would be such a waste to put all that effort into new hardware if you're just going to struggle through it. Just take a few hours for yourself... I'm guessing since you're stuck in quarantine right now, you actually have some time on your hands 😁

I think I'll need to set aside a couple of days to get everything fully up and running. I really thought I could just knock it all out in one evening after work... but of course, right when I actually need the time to deal with this, life gets in the way... but, oh well, it is what it is...
thanks, everyone...

Michael Jackson10 said:Basically, you should only be moving over raw data files. Don't bother trying to drag and drop your actual programs or games over... it almost never works. Sure, maybe a few tiny portable apps might run, but most things just won't behave when they're moved like that.
When you install an app, it writes itself deep into the operating system you're currently running. Your fresh installation of Windows 10 won't have any clue those games or programs even exist on your old drive, let alone how to run them...

So, honestly? The only real way to do this right is to reinstall everything from scratch on the new Windows instance. It’s actually better for the PC's "health" too... who knows what kind of digital junk you've accumulated over the years...

Thanks, I'll probably end up doing it that way. Looks like starting fresh is the easiest path after all...

Larry Ortiz5 said:It’s really not as simple as you think, just dragging files from one PC to another... You have to remember we're dealing with chipsets, drivers, and all that other technical junk that ties Windows directly to your specific hardware. If you try to just port everything over to a new machine with completely different chipsets and drivers, things aren't exactly going to run smoothly... It might not work at all, honestly. The only way to do it would be to clone the entire drive using something like Acronis, but if you ask me? My best advice is to just start fresh and do a clean install on the new computer... It saves so much headache. But hey, if you're absolutely dead set on cloning that hard drive, just Google "Acronis" and see if you can make it work... Just keep in mind it's paid software...

I get that. Honestly, that's exactly why I’d go through the hassle of a clean install... just to keep everything fresh. I definitely wouldn't want any leftover junk from the old OS cluttering up the new PC... that's just asking for trouble. But here's the big question on my mind: is there actually any way to make programs sitting on that old hard drive just... work? You know, plug them into the new machine with a fresh Windows installation and have them run like nothing happened... Is that even possible?

Hey there.
Can someone walk me through the process or maybe drop a link here? I just ordered a brand new PC, but I’m trying to figure out how to move everything from my old machine over to the new one—you know, making sure all my programs, games, and everything else actually work... I have a massive amount of data to move. Here’s the thing: the new rig has both an SSD and an HDD. My plan is to get a fresh install of Windows 10 on the SSD, but now I’m stuck. If I just copy everything from the old drive to the new HDD using my USB adapter, won't I end up dragging the old Windows files along with it? That’s the headache right there... I definitely don't want that old OS cluttering things up. Or, if I am forced to copy it, can I just go in later and delete all those Windows system files from the drive once the transfer is done?
I know I’ve made this sound way more complicated than it probably is... but I'm hoping someone here has dealt with this exact scenario and can point me in the right direction... 🤔🤔>

Thanks!😵>
