Windows 10 stuck in a reboot loop in IT Support ·
I think I’ll just take the whole rig in—it’s pretty much brand new, so it still carries that free diagnostic warranty (provided I don't crack the case open myself). Thanks for the help so far. 🙂

Alright, MemTest86 is finished. Here are the final results:

I downloaded MemTest86 and ran it during boot-up. Is this sufficient for a solid diagnosis, or should I be looking at something more robust?

Hey everyone.

A week ago, I picked up a build based on this thread. The only real departure from the Smarticov suggestion was the power supply—I ended up going with this one.

Last weekend, I got everything set up: installed Windows 10, the motherboard drivers (System & Chipset + LAN), plus the GPU and monitor drivers (using what came on the provided disk). Everything ran smoothly until yesterday, when the system started crashing. Today, I can't even get it to boot properly; it just enters a continuous reboot loop. Here are some of the error codes popping up (roughly in this order):

Code:
IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
PAGE FAULT IN NONPAGE AREA
SYSTEM THREAD EXECUTION NOT HANDLED
SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION
ATTEMPTED EXECUTE OF NONEXECUTE MEMORY
KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAIL

After a bit of Googling, my gut feeling is that it's a driver issue, though I'm not entirely sure which one. I tried a clean reinstall of Windows 10—wiped the previous partition on disk 1 and started fresh. It gets through the initial setup until the first reboot, then it hits the same wall with the same errors. At this point, I'm starting to wonder if we're looking at an actual HP hardware failure?

A few observations that might be worth noting:
1. CPU temperature in the BIOS sits at about 50
2. Motherboard temperature in the BIOS is around 40
3. When I was still able to run HWMonitor yesterday, the CPU temp was a bit lower—somewhere in the 44-46 range. Nothing else stands out.
4. The SSD I'm installing the OS on is disk 1, not disk 0.

The fans are spinning fine. I’m hesitant to crack the case open since it's a brand-new build (warranty concerns, you know?) and there doesn't seem to be any dust buildup.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I call Best Buy on Monday?

Thanks.

Great, thanks everyone. 🙂

Maybe we don't need to go overboard here—the guy mentioned money isn't really an issue, he just doesn't want to deal with the headache of picking parts anymore. I set a bit of a ceiling on this budget because I figured it covers everything he needs, and frankly, I was worried if I gave you guys free rein, you'd suggest some overkill, top-of-the-line enthusiast rig. 😬

Here’s what crimsonstag84 suggested, with a few of my own tweaks:
- A Western Digital HDD—personally, I trust them a bit more than brands like Toshiba or Seagate. Though, I could be wrong there.
- An Intel processor, specifically the Intel Core i3-6100 that halek recommended. The only catch is finding a compatible motherboard; halek's suggestion didn't include one for Intel, so can anyone recommend a decent option?

Western Digital HDD 1TB Blue, 3.5", 7200RPM, 64MB Cache, SATA3, WD10EZEX ($135)
Intel Core i3-6100 (3MB Cache, 3.80 GHz), s1151 ($333)
SAPPHIRE RX 460 2G D5, 2 GB DDR5, 128-bit, 1210/7000 MHz ($310)
Zalman Z1 mid tower case ($89)
450W XFX Pro Series full wired edition, ATX 2.3, P1-450S-X2B9 ($129)
LC POWER Cosmo Cool CC-95, socket 775/1155/1156/1150/AM2/AM3 SSD 120GB Kingston HyperX Fury, SATA3, SUV400S37/120G ($31)
DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-14900 1866MHz CL10 Kingston HyperX Fury, HX318C10FBK2/8 ($180)

Hey everyone.

I'm looking for some recommendations for a PC build around $1833—just the tower, no peripherals or OS included. This is for my retiree father; he has pretty basic needs and isn't planning on upgrading anytime soon, so I’d prefer not to blow through the budget. Alternatively, if there's a way to get an OS (Windows 7) pre-installed without a massive markup, let me know. In the end, I'll probably just handle the x64 install myself, but I'm feeling a bit lazy about it today.

Use case: web browsing, older games (up to roughly 2005), movies, series, music, and Office tasks.

A few notes:
- He's using an old monitor that seems to only have a VGA port. I might consider buying a new one eventually, but for now, we're sticking with this one.
- I'd prefer to stick to US retailers—ideally somewhere like Best Buy where I can pick everything up and perhaps even have it assembled in one go.
