GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Installed the latest drivers. No change. Still the same issue.

It seems to be behaving now after I uninstalled Afterburner—I had been overclocking the card previously. Why that would interfere in the first place? Unclear.

But there's a new problem. When running stress tests with MSI Kombustor, the results are garbage. Even worse, it won't read any specific data—no clock speeds, no memory stats, no temps, nothing. It just identifies as a Radeon 78xx series.

Same story with CPU-Z. It can't pull any detailed specs; it just reports the 78xx series.

Tried a few games, including Battlefield 3. Runs on Ultra without any hiccups.

Just picked up an AMD Radeon HD 7850, and the headaches have already started.

I wiped all the Nvidia drivers, pulled my old Nvidia 8800 GTS out of the rig, installed the drivers from the disc, and rebooted. Now, the system hangs for a few seconds right after Windows loads. The image just freezes—mouse won't move, keyboard is unresponsive... nothing. I tried restarting a few times, but no luck. Eventually, I had to use Safe Mode to perform a system restore; now I'm stuck running on basic VGA drivers while I hunt for a fix.

The PSU is about 7 or 8 months old, a 550W Chieftec. My old 8800 was overclocked, so I assume it was pulling more power than this new card? Should be enough juice, right?

The rest of the build is an i5, 8GB of RAM, and an Asus motherboard. Everything is relatively recent, maybe 5 or 6 months old.

Checked it out. Yes, it's supported.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks.

So the 7850 outperforms the 650ti. Is it possible to add another one down the road if I need to?

About $533 the graphics card?

It isn't designed for this, but it works.
...I'll check back in once the processor hits its limit. :P

Got it, thanks.
So, I did a little digging on Google and stumbled upon this thread regarding my motherboard...
If I could actually make sense of what they’re saying over there. Honestly, the whole thing smells like there's some serious issue with my board.

😍 That’s enough about my overclocking habits.

I figured I’d jump in here rather than starting a whole new thread, since we're already talking overclocking.

I'm running an i5-2500K paired with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 13.
The setup is in a Cooler Master Case,
with two 80mm intake fans at the front and one 120mm exhaust out the back.

Overclocking isn't a priority right now, but who knows what might happen down the road? I'm mainly wondering how efficient this cooler actually is—will it hold up if I decide to dive into it?
And given my current hardware, just how much headroom does this CPU really have for an overclock?

The card needs to handle Battlefield 3 on a mix of high i med settings—primarily keeping textures on high—at 1024x768. My current setup only hits med-low, which just isn't cutting it. It’ll also be used for occasional gameplay recordings of other titles.

All three can run BF3, even on ultra at 1080p, but expect around 35 FPS without AA or Vsync.

casualfox22 said:I have a question. I just ordered an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX 768 mb. Did I make a good choice? How does it handle Call of Duty: Battlefield 3?

I have a similar card, a GTS, which I assume is weaker. It’s definitely showing its age.

In my opinion, Call of Duty: Battlefield 3 is one of the most demanding games out there right now regarding graphics.
You can run it on medium settings at 900p, but it's a struggle because you're right on the edge of playability—around 32 FPS. When there's fire or dense scenes, the performance drop is heavy. That's how I run it.

You can hit Full HD 1080p if you drop everything to low, but it's the same story: about thirty FPS.
If you stick to 720p on low settings, you'll get 40+ FPS and won't have to deal with stuttering.

The rest of my build is an i5 2500k with 8GB of RAM.

All in all, you can still play what you want with this card; other games run without issue.
Skyrim runs on high settings at 1080p.

The old guy exhausted his options, so we ended up with this.

Didn't want to clutter things up by starting a whole new thread.

A monitor for about $833. What should I be looking for here? Any real best buys at this price point?

I'm looking for an all-in-one printer and scanner by $333.

Nothing professional here. Maybe scanning a document five times a year, printing something occasionally if the need arises. That's it.

Budget is under $150—the cheaper, the better. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if it was just a basic $100, provided it's reliable and won't give me headaches for years to come.

Ideally, something from the selection at Best Buy.

Regarding the link for the NVIDIA GeForce GT series, should we expect a massive price drop on the previous generation?
And will there be any lower-end or budget Kepler cards hitting the market?

I've been eyeing a new GPU for a while now with a budget of around $300. Naturally, I want the best bang for my buck, so I was told to hold out for those Kepler cards... but at $600? Forget about it.

Does anyone actually know anything about these Kepler cards? A quick search led me to this link and a handful of forums where people just seem to argue over everything.

According to this article, the GTX 660—priced at $320—is supposed to perform on par with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580. Did I misinterpret that, or is this information even remotely reliable?

Apologies if this topic has already been covered. This forum is moving so incredibly slow that searching through it feels like a lost cause.
Which PSU should I buy? in Desktops ·
For about six months now, I’ve been slowly upgrading an old rig. Right now, I’m running an Intel Core i5 PC Build with three hard drives, an 8800 GTS, 8 GB of RAM, and a five-year-old 550W Corsair power supply.
The old GPU and this PSU are next on my list to swap out. Since I was advised to hold off on the newer Kepler cards for a bit, it’s time to focus on the power supply first.

To make matters worse, I’ve run into some recent issues—likely the PSU. When I boot up, everything spins for about two seconds before it shuts down, followed by a continuous loop of starting and stopping until I pull the plug entirely. Once I reconnect it, it boots normally. It doesn't crash mid-game; it just acts up after sitting overnight.

Anyway, what PSU should I get? Just something reliable that can handle this setup plus a future GPU upgrade for the next 3 or 4 years.
I'm not considering overclocking right now since I don't know much about it, though who knows what I might feel like doing down the road.

Ideally, I'd grab it from Best Buy since it's relatively close to me.
They currently have a 500W Corsair Series on sale for $125.
How good is that? And what would you recommend instead?
Looking for something budget-friendly that isn't total Scrap Yard quality.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, Benjamin King2, but now I'm stuck. I clicked through the links and did a little digging at the checkout. From what I can gather, this Medusa setup offers true 5.1 surround, whereas those SteelSeries headphones are just using >>virtual<< surround.

He suggested the 5H v2 because I don't have a dedicated sound card—just the standard one on my motherboard. Since the 5H comes with its own "sound card" on a USB, he claims the audio quality would be significantly better. He couldn't quite say if that virtual surround actually holds a candle to the real thing.

Bottom line: for shooters, I need to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from. Can I really rely on virtual surround for precision? If someone is behind me, am I going to know for sure, or am I just guessing?

I’ve been browsing the forums lately regarding these 5.1 and 7.1 headsets. It’s a mess out there. Some people swear you’re better off grabbing a high-end 2.0 setup for the same price, while others argue the exact opposite...

I see the Logitech G Series is on sale at this link. Is it actually worth the $150, or should I just invest in a solid stereo pair for the same amount?

To be clear: gaming is my only priority here.

Thanks.
