David Sanders4 said:Freezing can be caused by software issues, but hardware is just as likely. I'd suggest downloading a temperature monitoring app to see how things look under load. Also, when was the last time you replaced the thermal paste? It could also be a drive issue, so running something like HDD Tune Pro might help, along with HWMonitor for temps. I once had an older machine freeze up constantly because the thermal paste on the CPU wasn't applied properly at all.
Thanks for the reply.
That sounds like a good plan, and honestly, simpler than running a dozen different tests. However, I'm a bit confused because it sometimes freezes right after a morning boot-up. It sits overnight, cools down completely, then I turn it on, sit down to read the news, open a page, try to scroll, and—bam—it freezes. 😠
Could you explain exactly what steps I should take? I've swapped out the sound card, the GPU, the RAM, and the network card, but I haven't touched the CPU or even opened up the case to check the fans. Please let me know specifically what I need to do and how. 🤷
First off, wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!
I have an old desktop that I recently took to a repair shop to get formatted. I didn't ask for anything fancy, just a clean install of Windows XP. Now, I'm dealing with constant freezing. I work seasonally at a summer camp, and since the kids (mostly older high schoolers) were home alone while I was away, they somehow managed to mess up the computer so badly that Windows wouldn't even boot. Since I only had old installation discs, I sent it in for service. Here are the specs:
processor - Intel Athlon 64 2800
motherboard - NF8/NF8v Nvidia nForce 3 250Gb
RAM - 1.5 GB
graphics - Amd RadeonHD 3450 521mb
BIOS - Phoenix Award BIOS
HDD - 250 GB SATA
OS - Windows XP 5.1.2006, Service Pack 3
I don't want to sink too much money into this machine, but I’d love to keep it running for some retro gaming like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The issue is that it freezes randomly—sometimes just while I'm reading news on CNN or chatting on an online forum. In Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, it rarely freezes, maybe once during an entire night of online play, though some days it happens more often, including while playing the game.😢...For instance, in Ski Racing and B-2 Spirit, it freezes right when a map or track is loading. I'm looking for some guidance on what might be causing this and roughly how much it would cost to replace a faulty part. I am planning on buying a new PC soon, but as I mentioned, I want to keep this one around for older titles like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, B-2 Spirit, F.E.A.R., Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Far Cry, and Halo. The processor has never been overclocked.
Thanks in advance!
