GPU Buying Guide - (Read first post) in Desktops ·
Hey,

I posted here about a year ago asking for help picking out a new GPU—managed to hold out without one until now, but I'm feeling the itch again... 🙄 PES 2017 and FIFA just aren't running smoothly on my 42" Sony Full HD TV. Last year's PES 2016 and FIFA were okay, but FIFA 2017 won't even launch...😵

Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3 (PCIe 2.0)
Intel Core 2 quad Q9300 ........... Bottleneck?
DDR2 8GB 800
SAMSUNG HD502IJ 500GB
AMD ATI radeon 4770 512MB DDR5
Generic PC case
Corsair CX500M power supply...

Honestly, this rig is probably 7 years old. For what I actually do—browsing, home music recording, Cubase, Ableton—it's still fine. I don't need an upgrade for work, and let's face it, money isn't exactly flowing right now.😁

The new GPU is strictly for playing PES 2017 and FIFA 2017 via HDMI on my Sony KDL-42W650A. It's a Full HD TV, not 4K.
No budget for 4K, nor do I really need it...

I'm stuck using installment plans like everyone else in this economy, so I'm mostly looking at prices on Best Buy... where I can spread out the pain over up to 24 monthly payments.🤦

MSI R7 360 GDDR5 2GB .... $289
Asus MINI-R7360-2G .... $312
Palit GTX750Ti StormX OC 2GB .... $350
MSI RX 460 4GB GDDR5 ....$368
Palit GTX1050 StormX 2GB DDR5 .....$377
GIGABYTE GV-N1050D5-2GD ......$388

Hey there...
I was recently torn between picking up an AMD Radeon series card or just grabbing one of those cheaper R9 models that support DirectX 12. Someone suggested I should just hold out for the NVIDIA GTX 950...
Well, it just hit Newegg for about $160–$170—not sure what that'll end up looking like once it hits the local shops here...
I've been digging through some comparison reviews like this: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...gtx-950-review ...
They’re pitting it against the R7 370 and that beefier GTX 960...

So, basically, it's a toss-up between or this GTX 950 sitting at $160 (again, no clue on the final US retail price)...
Anyone got any advice?

Honestly, I’m not patient enough to sit around waiting for the price of that GTX 950 to drop—who knows what it'll end up costing anyway.
I'm debating whether to just grab this R9 270 instead. It’s definitely punchier than that MSI R7 370 with its DirectX 12 support, but the R9 is two years older while the MSI has three...
Plus, if you look at the minimum requirements for FIFA 16, it clearly asks for DirectX 11. http://fifa16news.com/fifa-16-minimu...rediction.html
Which basically means FIFA 17 probably won't demand DirectX 12 either... lol

So you're telling me I should pick up an Nvidia card at those prices... even though I'm not exactly... well, I've always been an AMD guy.

I’m also getting the feeling that this XFX AMD Radeon R9 270 DD edition actually holds more weight than those R7 370s or even the R7 265 cards when it comes to DirectX 12...
but man, I can't wrap my head around whether this XFX card will actually get DirectX 12 support—and if that's going to be a dealbreaker for the FIFA 17 minimum requirements. Now I've gotta figure that out myself...

I’m looking over the specs for that msi-r7 360 2 you linked...
I saw something similar at Best Buy, though it was pricier:

and

but honestly, that MSI one seems like the better build...
Anyway...

What's your take on how much life this card actually has left given the rest of my setup?

I’ve got a Fortron Hex Plus 500 w 80 sitting in my rig—picked it up from a buddy when he was offloading his old PC.
-It’s not just about picking between those two cards; I'm working with a tight budget here... >links and Best Buy
And obviously, it comes down to the cash. I want something reasonable—somewhere around $500 max—but it actually needs to handle what I do. I’m looking to play FIFA 15, 16, and 17 at 1080p...
I'm not entirely sure what the hardware requirements for FIFA 17 will look like down the road, but I'd like to be ready when it drops.
Next year, I'll probably scrape together enough to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and DDR3... but I can't swing that right now. I think this quad core can hold out for at least one more year.
The plan is to just move the GPU over to a new build later on... keeping the old power supply for now.

Hey,
I could use some help picking out a new GPU.
Here’s what I’m running:
GA-P43-DS3 PCIe 2.0
Intel Quad Q9300 @ 3GHz OC
8GB DDR2 800MHz
500W PSU
So, here's the deal.
I'm looking for something that can handle playing FIFA 15 on my Full HD TV via HDMI...
Right now, I'm torn between a new msi-r7 360 2gb ddr5$333 or an ASUS R7 265 2gb ddr5$433..
Not sure which one is better—the MSI is newer and cheaper, but it looks like it might be weaker performance-wise... plus it supports DirectX 12, while the 265 doesn't seem to have that support.
I wouldn't go for anything too powerful because of the bottlenecking—maybe just this: PCI-E XFX AMD RADEON R9 270 DD edition, 2GB DDR5$433 (though I have no idea how bad that bottleneck would be)

Any advice?
Thanks.

Amazon or Best Buy?

That’s exactly why I’m asking:

If I decide to go with this ASUS r7265, looking at the specs—the Power Consumption says "up to 150W" and mentions needing an additional 6-pin PCIe connector...

What kind of PSU should I actually be looking at? Keep in mind my Q9300 CPU pulls about 95W.

Would this unit work, and is it compatible with my setup (P43, Q9300..)?

Right now I'm running some 400W unit, but it’s ten years old and making a weird rattling noise...

Hey,

I need some help picking out a new GPU. It’s likely that in a few months—or maybe even a year—I'll be swapping out my motherboard, drive, RAM, and CPU (looking at a Z97 build next)... but for now, here's what I'm running:

ASUS ROG motherboard (PCIe 2.0)
Intel Core i7 processor
4GB DDR2 800

Seagate Barracuda HDD 500GB
AMD ATI Radeon 4770 512MB DDR5

Cooler Master case
400W generic PSU..

So, here's the options:

ASUS Radeon series $444

XFX Force AMD Radeon R7 265A 2GB DDR5 $400

The local retailers don't really have the exact R7 265 models listed, so I just linked to Best Buy...

XFX Force AMD Radeon R9 270A 2GB DDR5 $467

GIGABYTE AMD Radeon R9 270X GDDR5 2GB 256bit GV-R927XOC-2GD $551

ASUS R9 270X DC2 2GB GDDR5 $517 .... basically the same Asus one from the link... $475 (web)

What do you guys think about those two R7 265 cards? Also, what kind of PSU should I get, considering this Q9300 pulls about 95W on its own?
Is it actually worth stepping up to the R9 270s, and if so, which one is better?
And will any of these fit in my Cooler Master case? (That Gigabyte one from $533 looks massive...)

I'm buying this card strictly for PES and FIFA over the next couple of years... maybe Killing Floor 2... nothing too demanding.
