Microsoft Word 2003 dispute

Hey 😉, I’m running into a bit of a headache with Microsoft Word 2003. Whenever my Local Area Network is active, opening any document becomes an absolute crawl—sometimes it even gets so bad that it hangs the entire Explorer.exe process. If I just kill the connection or don't bother opening a file, everything runs perfectly fine. I'm currently running on Windows XP Service Pack 3. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
