Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Dana Murphy4 said:So, I'm thinking about installing Windows 7 Ultimate on my PC, but I'm a little worried about whether it's going to run smoothly without any lagging or stuttering issues.
My current setup is:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2160 @ 1.80 GHz
1.00 GB DDR2 800 MHz
ATI Radeon HD 4350 512 MB

I'm just not quite sure if everything will work flawlessly on this hardware, so I'd really love to get your honest thoughts on this...
Thanks in advance! 🙂

It should run just fine, though you'll want to be careful not to clutter it up with too many programs, since you won't be able to keep a bunch of different apps open at the same time given the memory.

Larry Patel4 said:I've run into a bit of a snag.

I'm having some trouble figuring out how to adjust the date and time settings, which I need to do so my laptop can actually run the system restore.

Back when I was using Windows XP, everything felt pretty straightforward, but I'm finding this version a little more confusing to navigate.

If anyone has a spare moment, could you please give me a quick rundown on how to find those settings? I just don't see the option anywhere. 🤷

Just give the clock in the bottom right corner a single click, and you should see an option that says "change date and time settings." 😛

Nancy Allen88 said:My screen just froze up on me, and when I finally rebooted my laptop, everything seemed fine except for the resolution, which looks absolutely terrible right now. I tried tweaking the settings in the display options, but half of the usual settings are missing, so I can't seem to get things back to how they were before. 🙂

These are the only options I'm seeing, but honestly, none of them look anything like my old setup. Does anyone happen to know how I might fix this? I would be so incredibly grateful for any help!

Well, you really ought to try installing the drivers directly from the graphics manufacturer. You should find out exactly which graphics chip you're running, then head over to the manufacturer's official website to download the correct drivers from there.

Nothing too crazy, really. My setup has 4GB of RAM, an Intel quad 2 Core Q8400, an Nvidia GTX 260, and a 1.5 TB drive. Should I maybe look into Windows 8 instead? ...

Sandra Brooks91 said:I completely agree, and I’d really urge everyone to be careful with their headphone volume too—and honestly, even when you're driving, try not to crank the car speakers up to the absolute limit...

Well, I don't usually blast it at maximum volume because I'm pretty sure I'd just blow out my speakers,
so I tend to keep it just a little bit lower than the max setting, just a tiny bit 😁
So, what kind of headphones are you rocking? For me, I find myself listening to the Eagles on repeat, usually cranking the volume all the way up until the very end of every track. I've been doing this for quite a while now and honestly, I haven't run into any issues so far.
As for my setup, I’m using these: link I feel like 96 dB hits that sweet spot perfectly; the sound is super crisp and the bass has a really nice punch to it.
I actually have them plugged into the external speaker output, which gives me a much more powerful sound than if I just plugged them directly into my PC. 😁
Now, since you're into that heavy metal stuff, I really can't say for sure how it would work for your ears. 😉

Michael Harris93 said:It’s honestly easiest just to disable those automatic Windows updates right after you finish installing the OS.

I’ve actually been doing things my own way since back in 2005; ever since I was running Windows XP SP2, I haven't bothered with those updates because, if I'm being totally honest, there's rarely anything actually useful included in them.

🤦

Does anyone happen to know how much longer Microsoft is actually going to be supporting Windows 7?
I was just thinking about it while I was trying to get my old laptop running properly earlier today, and it made me wonder when they’ll finally pull the plug on things like Windows Update.

Honestly, I think it would be much better if you just went ahead and returned it, rather than sitting there waiting around hoping the BIOS will finally decide to let you boot from the CD every single time you try 😉.

slypuma12 said:I'd suggest heading over to Windows Update first; if you look under the optional downloads section, you should see an English language pack available there, so just let it download and install.
After that, you can jump into the Control Panel—I usually find it easiest to switch the view to large or small icons to find things quickly. From there, go into Region and Language, then hit the Keyboard and Languages tab, where you'll find the option to install or remove languages. Just select English, log off, and then log back in.

And just like that, you'll have Windows running in English. 😉

Actually, it looks like this version isn't Ultimate, it's Home Premium, and unfortunately, Home Premium doesn't give you the option to change the display language.

Amanda White82 said:I was wondering if there's any chance I could actually run Windows 7 on my poor little laptop setup?

My laptop has
512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive, and it's about 7 years old now.😁

Do you think it'll actually work?

It really isn't going to work, and honestly, I wouldn't recommend trying it because the specs are just way too weak.☕
The hard drive will struggle enough, but the real bottleneck is definitely that tiny bit of RAM you have.

Brian Campbell36 said:Is a 37-second boot time considered decent when you're running on a standard old-school hard drive?

Honestly, I think that's actually quite impressive 😉given how much slower those older drives can feel

Joshua Ramos14 said:I thought I'd jump in here and ask for a little help myself 😁

I'm working with an HP 6830 and running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, but ever since I finished the installation, I haven't been able to get Bluetooth to work at all. Every time I try the setup, it just insists that my system doesn't even have Bluetooth capabilities. It’s pretty strange because everything was working perfectly fine just last week, and it worked without any issues back when I was using Windows XP. However, since this most recent reinstall, I've been stuck, especially since I'm seeing two yellow warning icons sitting in my Device Manager. Does anyone have some advice on how to fix this? 😁

Honestly, though, Bluetooth on these laptops almost never seems to work correctly anyway...

Honestly, most of those programs are just total junk and a complete waste of space; if you really want to get things done, all you actually need is CCleaner and Auslogics Disk Defrag.

analoglynx37 said:Hi everyone, I recently picked up a laptop that came with Windows 7 pre-installed, and I was wondering if there's any way to transfer that license over to a desktop computer I'm planning to buy for my kid. Since I don't have the original installation disc on hand, I'm not sure if it's possible to reuse it for the new setup. Thanks!

Unfortunately, you can't 😉

Noah Thompson said:but will I actually be able to pull off what I was asking about?

thanks

You definitely can, you just need to create one more partition first, and the best part is you don't have to format anything at all☕
Amanda White82 said:Is it possible to upgrade Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium using a disc?

I can only find instructions for upgrading through the Windows Live Upgrade tool online.

If it is doable, does anyone happen to have a tutorial for this😁?

not really🤷

Noah Thompson said:Hey there,

I've got this 2TB WD Green drive that currently just has one single partition holding all my files,
and since I'm planning to install Windows 7 on it pretty soon—given that it's mostly been used as a storage drive until now—I was wondering if it's possible during the Windows 7 installation process
to split the drive into two separate partitions? For instance, I'd love to set aside about 200GB specifically for the OS, while leaving the rest of the drive as a data partition where my current files already live. I'm really hoping I won't run into any issues with my existing data, because I don't want to have to wipe the whole hard drive clean just to create a new partition.

Thanks!

Just a heads up, Windows is going to feel pretty sluggish on that drive because it's only spinning at 5400 RPM, whereas most standard drives you'll find these days run at 7200 RPM.

Brian Campbell36 said:On a slightly different note—and I know this might be a bit off-topic for this specific thread—I was wondering if you all think this setup is still pretty solid, or if it’s finally time for me to start looking at some hardware upgrades?

Based on the benchmark scores, everything looks fantastic, so I don't think there's any real need to upgrade anything just yet 😉
