Upgrade or a whole new build? in Desktops ·
Kimberly Gomez34, why on earth would you pair a GTX 1060 with a Phenom? That’s just madness. Did you actually watch the video above? In most games, that CPU would end up bottlenecking the card by half.
BTW, the GTX 1060 is essentially the direct response to the RX 480.
Drop me a PM if you want details on the 2-year warranty 🤷

They’re likely slashing prices because the RX 470 is right around the corner. They pulled the exact same move with the GTX 970 just before the RX 480 hit the market (Inno was priced around $767)

Oh man, seriously... this is one of those rare games that actually managed to kill off my old i5 750 and my 280x graphics card.

It wasn't until I swapped in a better CPU and updated to the Vulkan drivers that I finally saw anything above 60 fps, though it still dips below 50 in certain spots.

The overhead

Look, even an RX 470 (assuming it performs similarly to a 380X) isn't really meant for those specific CPUs. As you can see, in certain scenarios, those GPUs could offer 70-100% better performance than what those processors can handle—no amount of overclocking is going to fix that gap. For those types of processors, a card in the range of an R9 270 or a GTX 660Ti is the sweet spot. Sure, they might push a bit harder occasionally, but you’d end up with a totally unbalanced rig, especially since modern games are such outliers. Of course, there will be instances where even those cards hit a bottleneck, but again, those games are exceptions (for now), so you might get away with it.

I actually just read over on PC Gamer that a guy swapped out his i5 750 for an i5 6600k while using a 280X, and he saw a massive jump in performance in Doom.

HU just dropped a new video comparing the GTX 1060 and the RX 480 running on an i5 750 and a Phenom II 965, using an i7 6700 as a baseline to show what happens when you eliminate the CPU bottleneck.

You really should have told them. They need to provide a full replacement under warranty, not just a repair. If they go the repair route, the warranty period should be extended by however long the device was out of your hands.

BTW, which one is the "black" version and which is the standard one? 🤷
I know there are laser and optical options, but I'm looking for the specific distinction here.

Wait, what?

A warranty is a warranty. You either have coverage or you don't. 🤷

What kind of "shortage" is this? It’s straight-up highway robbery. If they’d just have the decency to name the shop, at least we could go online and drag them through the mud properly.

I’m afraid they aren't kidding around. There really isn't any other way to look at it.
At the end of the day, not everyone is in the loop, which is perfectly fine.

Since you mentioned that having $33 is worth its weight in gold—at least this or this (especially considering a 5-year burner).

If you're looking at the links, you could easily get by with this or this (the new silver version).

These are honestly solid power supplies without breaking the bank; they'll handle about 90% of GPUs out there, provided you aren't running one of those massive power hogs.

I don't think he's messing around here 😬 That's why he didn't notice any difference at all

Angela Richardson - if you want to actually see those SSD benefits, everything needs to be installed ON IT (meaning the OS, your apps, and the games you want to speed up have to be there)

No way. It feels like they totally scammed them (charging for Corsair but stuffing in Shroteks instead). They probably assume the average Joe isn't ever going to bother opening it up to check what's actually inside.

The RX 460 is arriving on July 28th. We should see the 470 around early August too, though nothing is officially confirmed yet. Basically, it's happening very soon.

Did you install macOS and those specific games onto a Samsung? 😁

The ASRock FM2A88M-HD is a motherboard with an FM1 socket... this is basically the most powerful processor I can run on it, which is why I'm hunting for the best possible GPU to pair with it since my next big move will be a completely new PC build.
What would you suggest? I'm open to Nvidia too...

What specific power supply are we talking about (make and model)? You'll need to pull up the actual page to see the details.
It turns out those last-gen graphics cards are actually the best deals to grab during the sales
Disus 🤣

I'm guessing they don't offer shipping to the US, right?

He’s starting his own thread.
So, is that really all you need? You could probably pull this off on a much tighter budget—think something like a budget Intel build with integrated graphics—and call it a day. However, if you're planning on storing massive amounts of high-def video content,
you'll definitely want to look into extra storage options.

You might be able to track down a used HD7770 (R7 250x) somewhere. Most of what's out there is secondhand.

Take a look at this, though I’ve got my doubts about it.
