Hey everyone!
My power supply has been acting up for a while now—making all sorts of noises, vibrating through the case, rattling the chassis... you know the drill. It's definitely time to swap it out, so I'm hunting for a budget-friendly fix to keep this old bucket running...
Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz
RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz
MB: ASRock P67 Pro3 (CPUSocket)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2GB
Disk: Seagate ST3160811AS
Right now, I'm running an XFX 480.
Thanks.
That’s awesome! Looks like I finally caught you $100. Just in time...
Thanks
Got another quick question regarding power supplies.
Since I’m most likely going to grab the XFX Radeon HD 4870, which PSU would actually be enough to handle it? Is a Gigabyte 460W going to cut it... or am I asking for trouble? And does it even have all the connectors I'll need?
Kyle Sanchez4 said:Nah... he actually specified the board too... we're looking at an AM2 processor here.
It’d probably be a smart move to toss in an $133 AMD Athlon II X2 240
just to be safe...
Okay, one more thing... this AMD Radeon HD 4870 uses PCI 2.0, but I can't find anything online to confirm if my motherboard even supports PCI 2.0...
Because if it doesn't, then I'm basically screwed, right? Total waste of time...
EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. XD
So, here's the plan... I'm thinking about picking up a used AMD Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of DDR5, grabbing some 4GB of RAM, and just finding a decent power supply to get me through for now.
Honestly, I think that's the smartest move I can make right now...
Green... just green... everything turning that shade... it's all starting to shift... honestly, I don't even know where to begin with this... it’s like we’re watching the whole landscape transform right before our eyes... and frankly, it's enough to make anyone lose their cool... just constant, unrelenting change... it's exhausting... really... kaže:
So, you're talking about that whole AMD Radeon HD 5000 series lineup...
Is there actually anything decent within my budget that can handle what I need... or am I just throwing money into a black hole here...?
So, the power supply is non-negotiable. Got it. We’ll get that sorted out then...
But now we've got Windows 7 and DX11 hitting the scene, so what's the actual deal? I mean, specifically with DX11...
Oh, great... just what I need... one more thing to break on this rig... 😕
James Morris4 said:Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't... honestly, you probably don't want to know the truth about that thing 😁
That's just some off-brand, no-name power supply, and let me tell you, those things are never, ever reliable. If you care about your GPU, the only thing that actually matters is the amperage on those +12V rails.
Just play it safe and do what Tamb suggests.
Look, I mean, I think the power supply will be fine! I'm an optimist at heart, really... 🤣

Grab an EVGA 460 W power supply from Best Buy—maybe around $100
then pair it with an Nvidia GeForce 250 for about 750-$267
Why on earth would I need a new power supply? Is my current 400W unit really not going to cut it?
Alright, so I'm on the hunt for a new GPU!
Here’s the current situation;

PSU: The power supply came built into the case, here's the link http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/system-cabin...eries-6099-ca/
RAM: 2x512MB in dual channel
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster T220

I've got $333 set aside for the graphics card, and I'm also thinking about grabbing an extra 2x2GB of RAM to throw in there too...
I need this card for 3D modeling, video editing, and all that jazz—you know, Maya, Adobe After Effects, etc.—and obviously for gaming as well.
I don't plan on touching the CPU because, frankly, I just don't have the cash for that right now...
So, let's hear your recommendations! Best wishes and cheers XD
Thanks XD
