It appears that the vast majority of those infected by this illness actually originate from Europe (and America!). The initial cases were identified in Italy, though we are seeing them pop up in Spain, Germany France, Austria, and England as well. As for age, the range is quite broad; you could be looking at someone in their 70s, or even as young as 20, which seems to be the lower limit ( 😢 ).

Thanks a lot for the replies; they’re definitely giving me some much-needed confidence. 🙂
A few months ago, I went through an incredibly stressful stretch. Between finishing high school, prepping for college entrance exams, dealing with graduation requirements, and trying to pass my driver's license road test—which I still haven't quite nailed down—it was a lot. Everything wrapped up fine, but when I finally went on vacation, I basically slept my life away. I was pulling eight hours a night, which is an absurd amount of sleep for me, honestly. Then, out of nowhere, this pattern started. For about ten days, I was surviving on maybe three hours of sleep a night. I can't nap during the day to save my life. There were brief breaks where I’d get five or six days of decent rest—maybe six or seven hours—but then the cycle would just reset. A couple of nights of zero sleep, followed by two or three hours, then four... it’s been going on for about thirty days now, with those occasional short lapses. It helps when I manage to relax; my head feels calmer. But even then, sometimes it takes a massive effort, and there are moments where I feel strangely rested, almost as if I actually slept, despite having barely closed my eyes.
In all honesty, the insomnia itself doesn't bother me too much. I function pretty well during the day, though I do deal with the occasional headache or a dip in concentration. Generally, I'm doing alright. It was more this specific, extreme version of it that had me worried.
For the last two days, I haven't managed more than three and a half hours of sleep. Last night was slightly better; I hit the sack at 11:00 PM and drifted off around 2:00 AM. The night before that? Same bedtime, but I didn't fall asleep until 3:30 AM.

Greetings, everyone.
I am twenty years old, and lately, my struggles with sleep have been intensifying. I typically averaged six to eight hours, but then—for no discernible reason—that number began to plummet. I lie down feeling utterly exhausted, yet sleep remains elusive. Currently, I am scraping by on four hours at most, and there are nights when I don't sleep a single minute.😢
I attempted to incorporate more physical activity; initially, it provided some relief, but now it does nothing. I have not taken any medication.
What has truly shaken me is discovering the existence of a certain type of fatal insomnia. Here is the entry from Wikipedia:
Fatal familial insomnia (FBI) is a very rare autosomal dominant inherited prion disease of the brain. The dominant gene responsible has been found in just 50 families worldwide; if only one parent has the gene, the offspring have a 50% chance of inheriting it and developing the disease. The disease's genesis and the patient's progression into complete sleeplessness is untreatable, and ultimately fatal.
The disease has four stages, taking 7 to 18 months to run its course:
1. The patient suffers increasing insomnia, resulting in panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. This stage lasts for about four months.
2. Hallucinations and panic attacks become noticeable, continuing for about five months.
3. Complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid loss of weight. This lasts for about three months.
4. Dementia, during which the patient becomes unresponsive or mute over the course of six months. This is the final progression of the disease, and the patient will subsequently die.
The condition is exceedingly rare, caused by mutations in genes known as prions. However, I am more concerned about the sporadic version of this disease, which follows no predictable pattern regarding who it strikes, and the outcome remains—more or less—fatal.😢
Do you believe I am one of those rare "lucky" individuals exhibiting the early symptoms of this disease, or is this merely classic, albeit chronic, insomnia?
Please respond as soon as possible. I have no one else to turn to yet, and I am quite frightened by this.😢
