I’d suggest going with Windows XP SP3. Obviously, I'm talking about an unofficial version, but you just have to generate a key for the unit during installation and you're set. I’ve been using it for over five years now. I wipe the system constantly and everything always works perfectly—it feels fully licensed. If you can't manage that, try going through the Department of Education to see if they'll provide the Windows license you need for school. Or just ask one of your professors; if you're still a student, schools often provide them for free or at least a 50% discount.

I’m with you on that. Linux is king, but because of how much Microsoft pushes their stuff, everyone ends up stuck using Windows XP or even Vista. Honestly, I’d much rather be running SUSE 11 or Knoppix, but it’s all the same crap. You get different skins and a few minor tweaks here and there, but at the end of the day, they're all running on the same kernel.
