Overclocking (Main Thread) in Desktops ·
If you’re going with DFI, grab some VX memory featuring either bh-5 or utt chips...
Just crank the voltage up to at least 3.4V and you can push them as hard as you want.

Excuse me, but A-Data hits 460 with 2-3-3-6 timings...
And right now, I’m easily cruising at 416 using those same 2-3-3-6 settings...
Oh, and that's on a 1T command rate—something that seems to give Kingmax users a hard time...

Look...
that’s why my A-Data 400 hits lower latencies than that hardcore466 guy's setup.......
The odds of finding two decent Kingmax sticks? You might as well try to stick your finger up your ass without making a mess.......
They run on SPD profiles.... and they work on pretty much any motherboard out there......
But their SPD data is total garbage......

HD... if you're upgrading to new tech anyway, just grab a SATA drive...
It’s not a massive leap, but why not?
Get the GTO2 graphics card instead...
Try to steer clear of Kingmax DDR if you can... honestly, even some generic modules perform better...
The 300+ and 3200+ clock just as well, so you can save yourself about $30 there...
The motherboard is fine...
Pick up a case without a built-in PSU and just throw a Fortron 400w in it...

Nvidia memory? Hmm...
Honestly, I’m leaning toward joining the Epox crowd.
It offers nearly all the overclocking tweaks you find on DFI, but without the headache of dealing with DFI's complexity.
As for the RAM, stick to just two sticks. Trying to run four sticks at 1T is a nightmare unless you're using heavily overclocked modules.
Ideally, look for lower latencies like 2-2-2-5 or maybe 2-3-3-6. And please, stay away from Kingmax—though occasionally you might stumble upon a decent pair if you're lucky.
With an Athlon, synchronous operation isn't vital, so feel free to mess with the memory ratio.
Regarding the GPU, the x800gto2 is the absolute best buy right now, even if you don't flash it to a higher model.

The Venice E6 struggles to break past 2.5GHz, which is a ceiling you'll hit on pretty much any board.
Usually, the CPU or the RAM is what actually bottlenecks your overclocking.
If you're strictly looking at the bottom line...
you can still pull decent performance out of budget options.
Albatron or A-Data will do.

It’s currently running on stock settings...
I can get an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 300+ @ 2250. I could probably push it to 2500 if we include a box Cooler Master cooler.
The Albatron nForce4 4x hits an FSB of 250... though I’ve managed to push it past 340.
I've got 2x512MB Adata memory running at 400MHz with 2-3-3-6 timings. I can push it up to 430MHz if I stick with those same 2-3-3-6 timings.
BIOS modding for the x700—pushing those clocks to 425/550 (though you can hit 510/620 if you're feeling brave).
Two 40GB hard drives... what a joke.
The NEC 3540 is a total dinosaur. I remember trying to squeeze performance out of an old machine like that back in the day—it was a complete headache.

And I'm already working on a custom, one-of-a-kind, absolute beast of a case... stay tuned.

Picked up a 3000+ version a few days ago and slapped it onto an ASUS motherboard (LGA 1151). The board has this ugly chipset—VIA K890 or something similar. It’s not a Core i7 setup, and there's no NVIDIA hardware involved.

The whole reason I went with this board was because it uses passive cooling instead of fans, even for the GPU.

So, using uGuru—ASUS's overclocking software—I pushed the CPU from 1836 to 2250 MHz. Temps only climbed from 39 to 43 degrees, and the CPU fan speed jumped from 3000 to 3300.

From what I can tell, those temps are basically nothing. The little guy is spinning like crazy without even breaking a sweat.
Has anyone else pushed this chip? How far did you go?

Also, uGuru has this feature where it automatically overclocks or downclocks based on what app you're running. Anyone actually used that?

Overclocking that chip depends entirely on the revision.....
the e6 versions hit about 2.5 on air, while e3s can reach 2.8 on air too....
And don't mess with overclocking inside Windows.... that's the fastest way to wreck your OS....
Do it in the BIOS.....
If you have an e3, just bump the Voltage to 1.5, tweak the memory speed, and push the FSB... you'll hit 2.8 without any issues......
Oh yeah... you should probably drop Hyper-Threading to x3 or at least x4...

And turn off that "cool and quiet" crap in the BIOS too...... it'll screw you over when you're trying to overclock.........
