On Intel chipsets, memory speed scales automatically right along with the FSB. You get those different ratios—like that 1:1 symmetric setup where a 266 FSB on a Q6600 defaults to 532MHz for the RAM. But here’s the real headache: when you start pushing high FSB speeds, like running an E8500 at 500x9.5 to hit 4500MHz, the minimum memory frequency jumps to 1000MHz. Not every piece of DDR2 out there can actually handle that. It gets even worse if you've filled up every single memory slot on the board; trying to overclock the RAM—or deal with the strain on the CPU itself—becomes a total nightmare.
