If the motherboard gave up the ghost, you wouldn't be seeing anything on the screen at all. Have you actually checked if all your drivers are properly installed? If we're talking about an older machine, there's a decent chance the keyboard itself just died, or maybe some circuitry got fried, leaving certain keys unresponsive. To me, this smells like a spilled drink somewhere along the line.
Assuming your drivers are all accounted for, you might want to try updating macOS or perhaps just doing a clean install. If the laptop is still under warranty, don't mess around—just take it straight to the service center.
