Greetings. My son—who is 21—has been battling a malignant testicular tumor. He’s completed his chemotherapy, and for the moment, things are looking positive. However, we have hit a bit of a crossroads regarding his first follow-up scan. Before the chemo began, he underwent a CT scan, and now his doctor has prescribed another one. That said, when we went to schedule the appointment, the technician on duty seemed quite taken aback by the request; he strongly advised us to opt for an MRI instead, mentioning that for younger patients at their facility, an MRI is the standard protocol. After doing some digging into the differences between CT and MRI, my son and I have reached the conclusion that the MRI feels like the more sensible route—primarily because there is no radiation involved, which eliminates any secondary cancer risks. I am seeking your perspective: do I have the right to decline the CT in favor of the MRI, and in your opinion, which path is truly the better choice?
