Sound card issues. HELP!!!

My son’s audio line is hooked up to the PC via a dual RCA to single jack adapter, acting as a headset. It works, but there's a ton of crackling. Should I just pick up a dedicated sound card? Any specific recommendations?
I ran into a similar headache with my Razer Ferox speakers; they start crackling whenever they're plugged in to charge, and if you twist the cable, the audio cuts out on one side entirely.
